You don’t have to go to university to succeed in life.- Rishi Sunak. Do you agree with Rishi Sunak? What would have been your reaction if it was the president of Nigeria that put out this post?

helinues:Should the PM of s country like UK be putting out a tweet like this? I think somethings are better left unsaid by some certain people. World leaders should encourage university education and not publicly discourage it. In my opinion, I think this is an irresponsible statement from the PM. |

So why was your demigod so desperate that he has to claim graduating from ghost schools and forged CSU diploma certificate to legitimise his phantom education?

Racoon:Are you ok at all? Can you ever stick to the subject matter and not mention Tinubu even when he is clearly not connected to the topic of discussion at all? Bro, you are not mentally health or well-adjusted and I can imagine you'd be a disaster, most would avoid, in a work or social setting because of an indiscrete incapacity to accept boundaries and/or an inability to refrain from malevolently overt and dogmatic focus on individuals. Fix up bro. You have carried on like this on Nairaland too long and are a nuisance now to others and yourself. @Topic. Sunak is right. He is dealing with the reality of what works for the nation he leads and cannot be concerned about other Countries. For example, if the UK could get more Brits to train in medical careers, other than Doctors who must attend University, then the UK would not need so much migrant labour in her medical sector and NHS . It was under Tony Blair that the thinking most young Brits must attend University was proactively promoted and supported. The world and Britain has changed since then to the extent hands-on vocational training, producing even 17 years old ready to go into skilled work like gas technician trainee or highest level HGV driver etal, could be a boost or even saviour for many economies world wide wide today. I have to add my comment depends on context and audience. I.e if it was a British audience he was addressing and if it is to motivate young people to understand that different paths, not university degrees alone, leads to career/personal success and fulfillment. For example, former UK Prime Minister John Major did not attend University. I rate Sunak because many don't understand the visionary things he is doing aided by his background as a child of Indian immigrants who has worked hard to get where he is and is seeing a laziness creep into the average British youth he know will lead to the 'Great' being removed from Britain soon. His current policy of bringing back compulsory and long-gone youth service, after Uni, is brilliant IMO. Especially as it mandates young Brits to work in the the Military or in community service sectors to expose them to appreciating what the UK has built and the need to proactively work hard to sustain and improve it. I rate Sunak but feel, ironically, he may lose the election because some of his policies may not resonate with the British electorate that is now into short-termism as most of humanity is today. Everything is the fault of the PM in a world getting poorer, thus making Brits poorer, and even worse for a PM who tries to get Brits to look at themselves. Sunak is asking Britons to make some fundamental changes I don't think most Brits are ready for. |

Bardo:Another good and valid point. Sunak knows the nation he leads well to understand that white-collar job elitism must be snubbed. Sunak sees that Britain still has the valid pathways that means a 16 year old who chooses not to attend Uni can enter vocational training of 2 years to be a certified gas Engineer at 18 to19 and be earning £60k (around 110 million Naira) or more per annum by the time his age mates are graduating age 21. He would have had a faster introduction into a career than his peers and may have a home mortage when they are still grappiling with seeking a job and then establishing a history of earning salary and credit-worthiness lenders require. With continous training as well and acquisition of greater skills/knowledge, he may likely stay ahead of his colleagues who went to Uni and perhaps even be their boss in future. Thninking outside the box is so essential today because the world is now ultra-competitive and only those who can do so will continue to thrive and find opportunities as the world inevitably becomes more 'harsh' as resources, jobs etal become more scarce. Those who get dogmatically and inmovably devoted to an idea, i.e "I most go to Uni" or "I need a masters degree to succeed", may end up failures who have wasted years of their lives because of rigidity of thinking and inability to consider plan B and even C. |

WizardOfNG:The PM of one of the most powerful country in the world coking out publicly to make this kind of statement is a big minus for education. A lot of young people in Nigeria want to get rich quickly without education or learning any skills. You see them going about saying “school na scam”. The PM saying the further justify their stand. While I understand the PM’s point, I still think he should not be the one to come out publicly to make this kind of statement. Again, what would be your reaction if this statement was made by the president of Nigeria? By now, the opposition, ASUU, civil societies, obidient trolls etc would have shut down the internet in protest and condemnation of the statement. |

seunmsg:I can see the validity of your point but in my first response to this thread I made it clear my view that Sunak is right depends on the audience his message is targeted at and the contextual reference for the message. Sunaks message is not wrong if targeted at a British audience and aimed at tackling the huge dearth of applicants for jobs , threatening to damage the UK economy, that do not require University degrees yet are crucial to the extent the UK and many nations of the world has to encourage inward migration to fill those vacancies. I keep seeing well-paid HGV drivers (heavy goods vehicle) vacancies in Canada popping up somewhere , whether Nairaland or elsewhere. Yet those vacancies would not exist if many young Canadians, considering their pay could be higher than graduates can earn, consider those jobs and then train for them instead of retaining an obsession with going to university in the belief such jobs are below them. Such an outlook can create a lopsided job market with most young people seeking so-called prestigious white collar jobs, and then making those over-subscribed, whereas many well-paid jobs deemed as less prestigious are neglected creating serious shortfalls in the technical/health, hospitality sectors etal. If Sunak is addressing the people he was elected to lead then he cannot allow his opinion, regarding what is best for the British electorate, to be policed by the needs of other nations and the rest of the world. You did not provide a link so I could not discern the audience but, unless Sunak is speaking in Nigeria to Nigerians, the part in bold in your post is patently unfair to Sunak and unreasonable overall. When is the PM of the UK under compulsion to automatically think about what is best for young Nigerians before talking about what is best for young Britons? |

helinues:The OP have not reply my mention, it is you Helinues that is doing so. So did he asked you to or it is just your usual trolling? Now Seunmsg created a thread about the UK PM talking about university degree not being necessary for being great or attaining greatness. He is talking about education. Now the OP is castigated him for making such a kind of statement which is true. However, the hypocrisy in disguise failed to remember how the same Bola Tinubu he venerated as a god is a bad example of acquiring certificate by dishonesty via his established forgery thereby committing perjury whose illegality was legitimised and thereby created a template for future political office holders in Nigeria. This issue is not going away. Posterity have recorded it. Everyone must not be a zombie.

ForValour:Of course and I must add that there is a need to prepare for hard work also. Not going to Uni does not mean you are an Olodo. That notion is a reality in other nations. We only think that young people are somehow inferior if they do not have a University first degree, or even Master degree, because we have made elitism, at every level, a mantra for how Nigerians live. That is why, in Nigeria, we view political leaders our Gods who are above the law whereas they are servants of the people, who must be answerable to them at all times, in the UK, USA, France etal. I have given the example of how John Major became PM of the UK yet never attended Uni. Yet he is educationally sound and knows what graduates and Professors know and much more by the time he became PM. Bill Gates is a Uni dropout yet he has transformed the world immensely. The main aim of education is to move adults into gainful employment and careers. The universally established fact is that the University path is not the only one available for gaining the education needed for gainful employment that leads to career success and fulfillment even though we misguidedly believe that to be the case in Nigeria. Personally, and applied to Nigeria, I think we need more specialist and vocational education courses , with large chunks of practical and hands-on training for niche employment, that can deliver youngster ready to go straight into waiting jobs. This will be progress beyond what we have now whereby we are producing a proliferation of first and master degree holders jobless like 3 to 8 years after graduating. |
