It is not irresponsible, it's common sense. There are various pathways to skills acquisition such as apprenticeship schemes. Much more experience gained on the job with many hands-on self-improvement training courses and accreditations later, dude is now a big and wealthy success in IT today with all his kids in prestigious UK private schools.

Nothing at all wrong with going to Uni. It is still very desirable but Sunak , given the challenges of the UK today, must be thinking Britain now has to encourage youths who do not wish to go to Uni to get on great career ladders through other paths.

He has said this because so many people who has been to the university and study certain courses do not progress with the course as is expected of someone witn university degree. They rather do the same job as individuals who didn't even further their educations beyond secondary school. So he said those type of courses should not be studied in the University instead as an apprenticeship which involve learning while working and eventually be certified like everyone else. Nursing and indeed many works has apprenticeship and that is what he is promoting.

Man mi, you're talking too much sense. I actually think high quality vocational training , completed in around a year or two max, would really benefit Nigeria.

It would be cheaper than Uni and the hand-on nature of the job means those who complete their studies can move straight into employment.with high level skills meaning they can work to very high standards acceptable anywhere worldwide.

its actually a very responsible and factual statement.

University education has its place. One of which is networking.

Exactly, most of the folks making good money are not university graduates but people with technical skills.
My paddy that those days when we were in uni, he was doing his masters in unilag ie early 90s. Omo, I saw the guys profile, he is a registered plumber and fitter in the UK. His residence I saw is valued at over 1m pounds.
Same those days I de with my kid bro visiting, he had a gas leak, see the small boy with one small car with all the tools in his booth that came to install the new boiler. See as this kid fabricated all the copper pipes etc, my aburo just de look the boy, told me if I know how much that boy makes, him that had his masters cannot smell such money! That the boy must have attended technical school or did an apprenticeship and then got his certification.
We have to focus more on hands on skills in this country. How many of us even work with our certificates?

Why shouldn't he say it?

You think everyone is like Nigerians who see university education as a basic necessity of life? The only education everyone must have is SSCE. If SSCE holders can't read, understand and write simple document then your education system is a mess and should be fixed. The solution isn't pushing everyone to universities.

That is based on your obviously limited understanding of English language
University is not for everyone neither from the individual perspective not the Societal perspective.
University is not the only place that education can happen.
People can get 100% educated within a business or corporate atmosphere through apprenticeships etc
Others may succeed at sport, music , theatre etc
Those Chinese building our rail and roads often did not go to any university whilst our engineering graduates are quite redundant

Dangote did not go to university,
Henry Ford did not
Innoson did not
Rose Bumkin grew the largest furniture company in America over decades. She could not read or write

Even "academic" professions like accountancy do not require university attendance .

He's absolutely right. In today's world, you can succeed without a university degree thanks to technology and the internet.

I left school in my third year because I realized I was wasting my time. Now, I'm doing much better without even considering going back to school. To me, it was a waste of time.

From the beginning, I've always wanted to drive trucks, and today I work with UPS in America. I make six figures, which is more than most bank managers or professors earn, both in Nigeria and abroad.

You can truly make it in life without a university degree. However, if you want to go to university, that's your choice, and no one is stopping you.
