Nigeria around late 90s to 2015 was hard if you don't go to any university. Right now, you don't need it. Though, it is advisable....but not mandatory.

I can see the validity of your point but in my first response to this thread I made it clear my view that Sunak is right depends on the audience his message is targeted at and the contextual reference for the message.

Sunaks message is not wrong if targeted at a British audience and aimed at tackling the huge dearth of applicants for jobs , threatening to damage the UK economy, that do not require University degrees yet are crucial to the extent the UK and many nations of the world has to encourage inward migration to fill those vacancies.

I keep seeing well-paid HGV drivers (heavy goods vehicle) vacancies in Canada popping up somewhere , whether Nairaland or elsewhere.

Yet those vacancies would not exist if many young Canadians, considering their pay could be higher than graduates can earn, consider those jobs and then train for them instead of retaining an obsession with going to university in the belief such jobs are below them.

Such an outlook can create a lopsided job market with most young people seeking so-called prestigious white collar jobs, and then making those over-subscribed, whereas many well-paid jobs deemed as less prestigious are neglected creating serious shortfalls in the technical/health, hospitality sectors etal.

If Sunak is addressing the people he was elected to lead then he cannot allow his opinion, regarding what is best for the British electorate, to be policed by the needs of other nations and the rest of the world.

You did not provide a link so I could not discern the audience but, unless Sunak is speaking in Nigeria to Nigerians, the part in bold in your post is patently unfair to Sunak and unreasonable overall.

I completely agree with you especially if it's folks you just listed above who says "you don't need a university education ", my reality is that PM Sunak stands the risk of misleading the young ones since he is not competent to recommend skipping university education, he was privileged with having a Physician father and Pharmacist mother who sent him to the best schools! If he had ignored those privileges to boycott university education and become successful in life, he could have been morally upright to recommend such.

He's talking from a vantage position - a place you may never reach or it's equivalent in your home town..

We have to focus more on hands on skills in this country. How many of us even work with our certificates?

Depends on what he mastered in and at. If he did investment banking or law at a top UK university, there's no way a plumber would out-earn him. Also, most of you supporting Sunak, and even he Sunak, would never have their children go the apprenticeship route.

There are so many professions that exist out of the university that are crucial to the survival of society and many people not only have the flair for them but get rich doing them e.g fishing, farming, trading, Hairdressing,laundry, sports, theatre/acting/ musician etc

University is not for everyone neither from the individual perspective not the Societal perspective.
University is not the only place that education can happen.
People can get 100% educated within a business or corporate atmosphere through apprenticeships etc
Others may succeed at sport, music , theatre etc
Those Chinese building our rail and roads often did not go to any university whilst our engineering graduates are quite redundant

This is even not a debate because I see no connection between University education and success same I did not see any connection between poverty and not attending university. I have seen many uneducated Fellows that are making it big and I have also seen many old graduates that are impoverished. It's an African mentality that you will not be successful if you're not educated. Grace and fate cannot be thrown into dustbin. God is a big factor in our success journey.

Not only that a lot of people coming out of university are unemployable because they have no skills that employers are willing to pay for

The UK government invests a lot of money in apprenticeships and other skill acquisition programmes that are moee relevant

Government should care because when people graduate and are unemployable the burden falls on the taxpayer to support them

FOCUS ON GETTING SKILLS THAT WILL FEED THEM

You don't need university to learn how to write code or develop apps or games or do film animation

A lot of IT skills that are monetizable you can learn at home

It is not irresponsible, it's common sense. There are various pathways to skills acquisition such as apprenticeship schemes. Some of the most intelligent and knowledgeable guys I have worked with in my over 10 years IT experience did not not go to any higher institution. When they talk, MSc holders listen.

I disagree... The truth is what it is.

Tertiary education beyond professionally impactful careers like Law, Medicine, and some sensitive aspects of Engineering are a luxury, oftentimes meaningless in the grand scheme of existence.


How many university graduates in Nigeria today still remember or function in their disciplines??!

Don’t compare it with Nigeria where decent apprenticeships programmes are lacking
