Point is that there are plenty of job that offer rewarding careers with good pay that do not require, as entry level qualification, a university degree as most white collar jobs do.

No one would be against young folks going to University per se and asking them to consider other careers , that do not require a first degree, is not targeted at reducing the number of young Brits attending Uni.

Sunak is probably looking at the literally thousands of well-paid vacancies, not needing a uni degree, young Brits can train to fill rather than immigrants continuously flocking in to take those jobs.

Are you ok at all? Can you ever stick to the subject matter and not mention Tinubu even when he is clearly not connected to the topic of discussion at all?

Bro, you are not mentally health or well-adjusted and I can imagine you'd be a disaster, most would avoid, in a work or social setting because of an indiscrete incapacity to accept boundaries and/or an inability to refrain from malevolently overt and dogmatic focus on individuals.

Fix up bro. You have carried on like this on Nairaland too long and are a nuisance now to others and yourself.

@Topic.

Sunak is right. He is dealing with the reality of what works for the nation he leads and cannot be concerned about other Countries.

For example, if the UK could get more Brits to train in medical careers, other than Doctors who must attend University, then the UK would not need so much migrant labour in her medical sector and NHS .

It was under Tony Blair that the thinking most young Brits must attend University was proactively promoted and supported.

The world and Britain has changed since then to the extent hands-on vocational training, producing even 17 years old ready to go into skilled work like gas technician trainee or highest level HGV driver etal, could be a boost or even saviour for many economies world wide wide today.

I have to add my comment depends on context and audience. I.e if it was a British audience he was addressing and if it is to motivate young people to understand that different paths, not university degrees alone, leads to career/personal success and fulfillment.

For example, former UK Prime Minister John Major did not attend University.

I rate Sunak because many don't understand the visionary things he is doing aided by his background as a child of Indian immigrants who has worked hard to get where he is and is seeing a laziness creep into the average British youth he know will lead to the 'Great' being removed from Britain soon.

His current policy of bringing back compulsory and long-gone youth service, after Uni, is brilliant IMO.

Especially as it mandates young Brits to work in the the Military or in community service sectors to expose them to appreciating what the UK has built and the need to proactively work hard to sustain and improve it.

I rate Sunak but feel, ironically, he may lose the election because some of his policies may not resonate with the British electorate that is now into short-termism as most of humanity is today.

Everything is the fault of the PM in a world getting poorer, thus making Brits poorer, and even worse for a PM who tries to get Brits to look at themselves.

Sunak is asking Britons to make some fundamental changes I don't think most Brits are ready for.
1 cold Orijin for you.

The Brits are an entitled, lazy, overfed bunch!
Most of them still believe they are a great country and keep on bragging about how powerful they are.

I was reading their boasts on Quora, about an hour ago, how their 78,000 strong military would defeat the Russians (without NATO) in a war.
🤣

People who do not want to work, or even do mandatory military service, will win a war against and equal military might?.

I actually wonder how they ruled the world hundreds of years ago, as they are soooo weak!
Their ancestors must be rolling in their graves.

Unfortunately Rishi that is bringing pragmatic solutions to these problems is seen as an immigrant-- hence he is not British enough.
Some even call him a houseboy.

So Rishi is likely to be booted out and they can continue their madness with their rose-tinted glasses.

They will eventually learn in a very hard way!

We have to separate reality from fact and emotions.

He spoke reality which isn't wrong, but the fact remains education is important whether formal or informal. However, I see you taking his statement emotionally.

You are just pained because you worked so hard obtaining a degree and yet not making so much

The PM said the truth, a lot of persons around the world has made money even when they are not university graduates

Here in Nigeria, there are some Master degree holders that can't get a N100k job.

Isn't it obvious he is right?

No matter how British he think he is, he's an immigrant
He's simply that outsider weeping more than the bereaved
What's happening in the UK happens everywhere irrespective of university education or not; the owners of the land tend to be picky when it comes to jobs

The statement is generally true but specifically false. To succeed in life we need structured discipline, one of the best places to learn structured discipline is the university. Things like how to manage time, resources, meet target, structure your activities, meet deadline are learnt in university. I'm not saying it can't be learnt outside university, it's just harder doing it outside.

Exactly, most of the folks making good money are not university graduates but people with technical skills.
My paddy that those days when we were in uni, he was doing his masters in unilag ie early 90s. Omo, I saw the guys profile, he is a registered plumber and fitter in the UK. His residence I saw is valued at over 1m pounds.
Same those days I de with my kid bro visiting, he had a gas leak, see the small boy with one small car with all the tools in his booth that came to install the new boiler. See as this kid fabricated all the copper pipes etc, my aburo just de look the boy, told me if I know how much that boy makes, him that had his masters cannot smell such money! That the boy must have attended technical school or did an apprenticeship and then got his certification.
We have to focus more on hands on skills in this country. How many of us even work with our certificates?
You have to even beg the plumber to come!

I recently had to live without hot water for over a week as plumber no gree come.
🤣

Mechanics, plumbers, electricians...make very good money.

I know Uni graduates who are working as receptionists.
So anybody who thinks going to Uni sets him up for life is deceiving himself.

I completely agree with you especially if it's folks you just listed above who says "you don't need a university education ", my reality is that PM Sunak stands the risk of misleading the young ones since he is not competent to recommend skipping university education, he was privileged with having a Physician father and Pharmacist mother who sent him to the best schools! If he had ignored those privileges to boycott university education and become successful in life, he could have been morally upright to recommend such.
He did not recommend skipping university
That is a malicious distortion of what he did
His message is not ambiguous
You do not need university to succeed in life

That is an obvious reality

It you have other talents/skill or interests e.g sports, acting singing
University might not be for you

The UK government is budgeting £2.7 billion pounds in 2024/2025 for apprenticeship schemes

Every person has a responsibility to determine what is best for them.
University Education in England and Wales is not free .Often students get into a lot of debt to finish and then find they cannot get a job so this is very appropriate advice

So your language of boycott and morals are totally tangential to the issue on ground the advice can be interpreted as taking time to decide if you need a university education at a particular point of your life

E.g Wayne Rooney did not need a university education at 18 neither did David Beckham nor Anthony Joshua

If you want to be a truck driver o a farmer you don't have to go to university

Depends on what he mastered in and at. If he did investment banking or law at a top UK university, there's no way a plumber would out-earn him. Also, most of you supporting Sunak, and even he Sunak, would never have their children go the apprenticeship route.
I get you point and agree with you fully. Of course not all investment bankers or lawyers will be mega reach. My aburo is a UK trained and based lawyer pulling in 70k with some council after over 15 years of practice, some technically skilled guy at that stage and with much experience will probably own his own setup and earn that much, if not more.
The point is that for we over here, the minimum is always university degrees, which is good, but in most cases not professional courses eg medicine, law, lab tech, engineering etc that are hands on skilled courses. Must everyone study literature, masscom, etc when they can have technical trainings in carpentry, welding, mechanics, craftsmanship eg boat building, electricians etc all properly certified and employable all over the world. Check online, more job offers in Canada, Germany, Japan etc all all looking for craftsmen, not university graduates with 10 degrees. Of course you still have demand for specialised ones too eg doctorsz nurses, computer folks and the rest.

Yes, that is what obtains in the UK. Lots of people get everywhere and everything without a university experience. But here in Nigeria, there are few or no opportunities to make that happen.

He is not discouraging anyone not to go to the university, but rather he is encouraging and advising people to go for the alternative if they can't go to the universities.

My junior brother went straight to work immediately after high school. He works in the hotel as kitchen staff during the day and goes to classes in the evening for ACCA courses.

He qualified as an ACCA chartered accountant in 2017, and he used that ACCA certificate to relocate to the UK, but he lives in Ireland now.

The internet has made things so easy; therefore, you don't have to go to a university to earn a living these days.

Most youths now use Google Career Certificates to break into the job market.
