In a significant move to ease the burden of fuel costs, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has inaugurated a new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling plant in Lagos. This development comes as a breath of fresh air for Nigerians, with the plant poised to service over 3,700 cars and 600 trucks daily, all converted to run on CNG—a much-needed alternative to the expensive petrol. Under President Tinubu's administration, there is a strong push to transition more Nigerians to CNG-powered vehicles, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy landscape.

Real Gist reports from Lagos, where the excitement is palpable as the new station opens its doors. Located in the bustling gas hub of Ilasamaja, the 5.2 million standard cubic feet plant is set to revolutionize refueling in the area. Kayode Opeifa, the executive director of the Centre for Sustainable Mobility/Access Development (MenSMAD), shared the community's enthusiasm, describing the facility as state-of-the-art with both a compression plant and dispensing outlet. This setup will not only allow CNG vehicle owners to refuel efficiently but also offer compressed gas in bottles or tubes for industrial use.

For many, the most compelling aspect of this new facility is the price point. CNG is being sold at approximately N200 per standard cubic foot for cars, taxis, and tricycles, and N260 per standard cubic meter for heavy commercial vehicles. This is a stark contrast to the soaring petrol prices, which have hit a staggering N650 per liter in Lagos and up to N2,000 per liter in northern Nigeria due to severe scarcity.

The relief and optimism among Nigerians are palpable as this new development promises not only economic benefits but also a more sustainable and affordable energy future.
