5 Countries That Recently Changed Their National Anthem by coputa(op): 1:00pm On Jun 03, 2024
In recent years, several countries have taken the bold step of revising their anthems to better reflect contemporary values and inclusivity. On Wednesday, May 29, Nigeria reinstated their old anthem as the official national anthem of the country.

In that light, here is a rundown of five countries around the world that have recently altered their national anthems:

Australia
Australia’s national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair,” underwent a significant change on January 1, 2021. The second line of the anthem was altered from “For we are young and free” to “For we are one and free.” This change aimed to acknowledge the long history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognizing that Australia’s history spans tens of thousands of years, far preceding European settlement. This small yet significant modification reflects Australia’s commitment to unity and reconciliation with its Indigenous population.

Austria
In 2012, Austria modified its national anthem, “Land der Berge, Land am Strome” (Land of Mountains, Land by the River), to promote gender inclusivity. The original lyrics, which exclusively referenced “great sons,” were changed to “great daughters and sons.” This alteration aimed to ensure that the anthem represents all Austrians, regardless of gender, fostering a sense of equality and inclusiveness in the national narrative.

Canada
Canada made a notable change to its national anthem, “O Canada,” in 2018. The line “in all thy sons command” was changed to “in all of us command.” This modification was part of an ongoing effort to make the anthem more inclusive and reflective of all Canadians, regardless of gender. The move was widely seen as a positive step towards gender neutrality and inclusivity, aligning with contemporary Canadian values.

South Africa
South Africa’s national anthem is unique, combining excerpts from several different languages and songs, including the hymn “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” and the former anthem “Die Stem van Suid-Afrika.” In recent years, minor changes have been made to the anthem to ensure proper pronunciation and inclusivity of all languages represented. These revisions reflect South Africa’s diverse cultural landscape and its commitment to honoring the linguistic heritage of all its people.

New Zealand
In 1977, the Government announced (in a supplement to the New Zealand Gazette issue of 17 November) that the national anthems of New Zealand would be the traditional anthem ‘God Save The Queen’ and the poem ‘God Defend New Zealand’. From this point on the two anthems have had equal status. Following the accession of King Charles III to the throne in September 2022, the words of the first anthem changed to ‘God Save The King’.

Those countries you mentioned are doing better than Nigeria. They're not earning peanuts as minimum wage compared to Nigeria.
Tinubu cannot force hungry and helpless Nigerians to learn national anthem.

Nonsense

These countries made modifications to their national anthems in "good faith" but that of Nigeria was done with "bad blood", all in a bid to bring down Olusegun Obasanjo who introduced our indigenous anthem. Will this derogatory anthem of Tinubu administration, stop the ongoing strike? I can't even make a successful transfer since this strike started today, I was debited on all transfers but no credit to beneficiary accounts, what a mess of a country? even those that need financial help from you can't get it because of this strike!!!

Re: 5 Countries That Recently Changed Their National Anthem by uncleck: 9:06pm On Jun 03, 2024
Reverting to an old anthem written by a colonialist with with relatively meaningless lyrics is the height of it all.

I've observed that national anthem means absolutely nothing to Nigerians. Infact, the name "Nigeria" invokes little or no emotions on the people because they don't even relate with whatever it stands for. So also with most states and their names.

People are more relatable with what they know and have attachment to. For instance, it's easier to identify myself as Igbo than Abian because the name Abia means nothing to me.

Sometimes I wonder why we still bear colonial nomenclatures like Africa, Nigeria etc. How on earth is Imo state government house called Douglas house till this day?

Going back to your vomit is what Nigeria just did. So out of millions of people in the country, there is no one worthy to compose a new national anthem that can have all the features needed in this contemporary times? FG and the lawmakers are all high on Arizona

We are in the season of rwvere

Emir of Kano was reverted
National anthem reverted.
Let the value of Naira be reverted
Let the salaries of our dealers called leaders be reverted.
Let the ruling or leading class age be reverted.

That is all I care about

Nigeria we hail thee is a colonialist anthem

Only a mental slave will embrace it!!

Even the name Nigeria was pronounced wrongly in the song.

Nigeria is 3 syllables (Nai-ji-ria)

It became 4 syllables in the colonial anthem (Nai-ji-ri-a)

This is possible because the composer thought she was doing some unfortunate peasants a favour by giving them a song to sing every morning in their animal farm

Would she have distorted Bri-taen to Bri-ta-en in the name of composing a darn song??

do you really think Nigerian anthem needs any form of modification?
for those countries mentioned there were genuine reasons - Australia was for all inclusiveness to accommodate their two major tribes, Austria and Canada was to address gender based issues that might be affecting the society while South Africa was unify all tribes and languages and New Zealand was to see to the change in power and leadership at England where they are being governed from.
why did we change our own anthem? even at that those aforementioned society would have informed their citizens long ahead before going on to do it.

There is no big deal in changing a country's National Anthem.
Nigeria's National Anthem that was changed was done in good faith. The Anthem was a product of military dictators from one side of Nigeria.
Other legacies of military dictators including the lopsided political structure and governance system need to be changed as well.
