Strike: Blackout As Workers Shut Down Power Grid by adenigga(op): 12:03pm On Jun 03, 2024
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the complete shutdown of Nigeria’s power grid by labour unions as the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress begins.

NLC and TUC commenced a nationwide industrial action on Monday in protest against the N60,000 minimum wage proposal of the Federal Government.

Announcing the shutdown of the national power grid in a statement issued on Monday morning by TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the transmission firm said the action was deliberately done by the workers.

The statement was titled, “Grid shutdown: Union Deliberately shuts down the National Grid.”

It read in part, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby informs the general public that the labour union has shut down the national grid, resulting in a blackout nationwide. The national grid shut down occurred at about 2.19am this morning, June 3, 2024.

“At about 1:15am this morning, the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room. Without any form of control or supervision, the Benin Area Control Centre was brought to zero.

“Other transmission substations that were shut down by the labour union include the Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba, and Osogbo transmission substations. Some transmission lines were equally opened due to the ongoing activities of the labour union.”

On the power generating side, TCN said the power generating units from different generating stations were forced to shut down some units of their generating plants.

“The Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its generating units while three others in the same substation subsequently shut down on very high frequency. The sudden forced load cuts led to high frequency and system instability, which eventually shut down the national grid at 2:19am.

“At about 3.23am, however, TCN commenced grid recovery, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the labour union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide.

“We will continue to make effort to recover and stabilise the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide,” the statement added.

I might be wrong, but I don't think NLC under Oshiomole used to shut down the power grid. Power was always made available irrespective of how long the NLC strikes held.

Jagaban is working haha... Nigeria is like a U-Turn on a road, once you miss it, you pray to see another U-Turn, if not you will continue heading to a wrong destination. To move Nigeria forward we need to sanitize and restructure our party system... Bad eggs and corrupt politicians are the founding fathers of our party. You must do their bidding if you must be the party's flag bearer. And they're the ones that will provide 20% of your cabinets, these people must occupy vital positions in your government so that you can do the bidding which you were selected in the first place. This is the primary reason people you think you voted for don't perform.

This is the major problem holding Nigeria from moving forward. If not we'll continue missing our U-Turn.

Tinubu has good intentions, Obi has good intentions, Atiku has good intentions. These men all have good intentions for Nigeria but until we address the process of getting someone to run an office, we are only deceiving ourselves. With the right structural foundation, a thief will find it difficult to steal especially when he's handed the position of chief custodian.

Practical example, imagine giving a thief your phone to keep for you... Will he steal from himself?
I believe you understand now

Oshiomole knew what would affect The common man and never touched such sector during strike, that was one of the reasons Nigerians always supported him.
Labour made the biggest mistake by shutting down power and Nigerians will turn on them before 24 hours. The only thing that keeping Nigeria going is NEPA.

It is not a good thing to shut down power grid. It’s affecting the same masses they’re having the strike for. No light since last night. I don’t support shutting down the power grid.

Thats good. Transporters should not transport at this time too. Everyone should take the time to play football and some other games around their homes. Its just for a while and for a better country. This president promised better than this; see what he is doing now. it is so sad. Imagine, people comparing PBAT with Buhari and saying the Buhari era is better. Can you imagine! A former senator, a former governor of Lagos State for 8 years? What exactly is happening? What exactly is wrong? Is it the Aso rock wizards? Or is it the water spirits?

We won't even notice the difference because there's not always light.

NLC has my total support on this strike, though.
