Total Compliance Across States As Strike Grounds Economic Activities by References1(op): 2:20pm On Jun 03, 2024
Government and other public activities were shut down in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital as workers across all sectors of the economy joined the nationwide NLC, TUC new minimum wage industrial action declared by Organised labour.

As early as 8am in the morning, some labour officials stormed the state secretariat complex, Ovom, to lock the gate and turn back some uninformed workers who went to work.

Though public schools were shut, students writing the West African Examination Council, WAEC, examination were not affected as they went ahead without any interference, it was however observed that some private schools were in session across Yenagoa just as several others were on mid term break.

While the strike recorded total compliance in the banking sector, leaving several customers stranded, the various markets in Yenagoa were opened for business.

There was also heavy security presence led by the Nigeria Police Force and men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps around the State Secretariat Complex.

NLC and TUC leaders and officials of affiliate labour leaders were stationed in key government offices, establishments and parastatals to enforce full compliance.

However, the state TUC chairman, Comrade Julius Laye who spoke with Vanguard in Yenagoa expressed delight over what he described as total compliance in the state.

He said: “The compliance level is total here. If you go to the Nigerian Content and Development Monitoring Board, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Federal and State Secretariat they were under lock and key. The banks are also complying with the strike directive.”

Strike: Fed, State secretariats, banks, schools, others shut in A’Ibom
ORGANISED Labour came out early to ensure compliance as both federal and state secretariats, public schools, banks and other businesses were shut as the indefinite strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) over disagreement with federal government on new Minimum Wage commenced Monday.

Vanguard monitoring team observed that commercial banks located along Ikot Ekpene Road, Abak Roads and Udo Udoma Avenue which host a number of financial institutions within Uyo capital city were under lock and key.

Federal workers at the Federal Secretariat along Abak Road and their state counterparts at the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat thronged out as early as 7:00am to picket both complexes, disrupting movement in and out.

A female civil servant who works at Itu Local Government Secretariat told Vanguard she left Uyo early for work but met the council secretariat gate locked, saying “I had to return to Uyo. I didn’t know the strike is going to be serious”.

However among private schools within the state capital, some did not comply with the NLC directive as their students and pupils were seen out for school with the notion that they were not alerted to stay home as a result of the strike.

Students of the Kaduna State Polytechnic have been locked out of their campus by labour officials in compliance with the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the NLC, TUC.

Union officials stormed the Unguwan Rimi Campus of the Polytechnic and drove the students out of the school before locking the gate.

On Friday, the organised labour announced that they will be commencing a nationwide indefinite strike due to the refusal of the Federal Government to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

Airports, banks and other government institutions across the country have shut down over the ongoing nationwide strike.

There is total compliance by Imo State workers with the directive to commence a nationwide strike by organised labour

The Labour leaders in the state, who barricaded the entrance of the Secretariat, were also seen chanting solidarity songs in support of their demands for a new national minimum wage.

The nationwide strike action declared by the organised Labour has crippled economic activities in Edo State.

The strike action was declared following failure by the federal government to reach agreement with the labour unions over the minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Gates to all banks in Benin city, the state capital, Federal establishments, Departments and Agencies were under lock and key in compliance with the directive of the NLC and TUC.

Workers of Edo State civil service who were recently paid the new minimum wage of N70,000 introduced by the state government also joined the strike action, as the State secretariat along Sapele Road where all the state ministries and Departments were located, was deserted.

The Federal Secretariat building located at Aduwawa was taken over by operatives of the National Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).

All public primary and secondary schools in the state capital were also closed.

Air travellers were also stranded as gates to the Benin Airport were shut.

Members of the statement by the Academy Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin and the state-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, also joined the strike.

Chairman of ASUU, UNIBEN chapter, Mr Ray Chikogu, in a statement directing its members to join the strike, said: “We have now received official directive from our National Secretariat to join the NLC indefinite nationwide strike over the failure of the federal government to conclude the upward review of the National Minimum Wage and reverse the hike in electricity tarrifs.

“We consequently direct all comrades at ASUU UNIBEN Branch to comply fully with immediate effect.

“While the strike lasts, there shall be no teaching, supervision, conduct of any examination, attendance of board or senate meetings.”

Also, the Chairman, Ambrose Alli University (AAU) ASUU chairman, Mr Cyril Onogbosele, confirmed that the strike was total, adding that all academic activities had been grounded in the institution.

Skeletal services were observed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), as workers said they were waiting for further directives from their various Unions in the Hospital.

At the Edo State Children Hospital, few workers were also seen rendering skeletal services to the few patients in the hospital.

Commenting on the action, the Chairman, Edo State chapter of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Peter Asemota, noted that the organized labour has many demands that have not been met.

He addad that the strike action was as a result of the inability of the federal government to met the N495,000 minimum wage and the hike in electricity tarif.

According to Asemota, “the union arrived at N495,000 due to the high cost of commodity prices and hardship in the country, but, the federal government was insisting on N60,000.

“The union is obeying national directive in the state despite the fact that Edo state governor is implementing the N70,000 minimum wage for its workers.

“We are in solidarity with the Edo state government but this is a national directive from the national and we have to comply.”
