A three-man panel of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has ordered Multichoice Nigeria to give subscribers on the DStv and GOtv platforms one month of free subscription.

The tribunal also fined Multichoice N150 million for challenging the jurisdiction of the court, which recently restrained it from increasing the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages.

Justice Thomas Okosu-led panel issued the ruling on Friday in Abuja.

In May, Multichoice Nigeria hiked the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages despite the orders of the tribunal.

News360 Nigeria reported that the CCPT had stopped Multichoice Nigeria Limited from increasing its subscription tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on May 1.

Multi choice is doing all these nonsense because there's no alternative. If not for live football games,I won't be spending 15700 for compact package monthly..

No smoke without fire. I hope they're not about to chase Multichoice out of the country with their bad policies. There's virtually no product in this country right now where the price hasn't skyrocketed or tripled the price before this administration. I find this a xenophobic attack on SA
Re: Court Tells Multichoice To Give Nigerians One Month Free DSTV, GOTV Subscription by kingsways:
I no understand

I find this grossly unfair. The is a private business and customers who cannot afford the subscription are free to downgrade or leave.

Premier league and other TV rights are very expensive. Nigerian TV companies don’t have these rights because they can’t afford to pay. If you doubt this, go and ask the late HiTV

These rights are paid for in millions of Dollars and everyone knows Naira has lost at least 100% of its value in the last one year alone!

DSTV has been struggling in financial performance and this sort of irrational action can make the company decide to shut down in Nigeria and if they do , thousands of Nigerians will lose their means of livelihood

See my country men. Don't accept the free meal. Ask questions as to why they should give us 1 month free? Is it a ploy to legalize the unnecessary increase?

U folks think we are fools. DSTV wants to use one month free subscription to lure back their several lost customers since the unreasonable hike. Almost half of their loyal customers in Nigeria have stopped subscribing while others are into free-to-air tingy. grin
We aint buying into this shenanigans. I stand with NTA. grin grin grin grin
