Following a 2-day hiatus, the national minimum wage negotiation resumed on Friday 7 June 2023 but reached another deadlock. During the session, the Federal Government’s team raised its monthly minimum wage offer from ₦59,000 to ₦62,000 while organised labour reduced its demand from ₦494,000 to ₦250,000. Following the discordance, the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage (NNMW) was adjourned, with the report to be communicated to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and for further consideration. THE GOVERNORS’ POSITION Meanwhile, Nigeria’s 36 state governors, while negotiations were still ongoing, announced that they can not afford even a ₦60,000 minimum wage . The Governors said the ₦60,000 minimum wage proposed by the Federal Government is not sustainable, and that if they accept it, some states will end up borrowing to pay workers. The initial N615,000 demand from labour was actually unrealistic. They probably started that high because they knew that the government team would also start from a ridiculously low figure. |
