No lies,most of our farmers are cashing out selling off their harvest to neighbouring countries and as export because they will gain more when compared to selling at the local market. I think it's also same reason why garri is expensive, foreign investors now buy all the cassava harvested with a price farmers can't turn down.

Export isn't a bad thing. It just means farmers need to produce more food. Productivity also needs to rise

The impartiality on the side of the government Is what I feel is costing us. Government shutting southern borders and northern border is not fair enough. If the government open up the southern border and there is an influx of foodstuffs to Nigeria, it should bring down the the price of foodstuffs here. The temporary solution is for either the government to shut down northern border so farmers can sell to local market,or open up southern border so southerners can bring in food from neighbouring countries.

The country is too reliant on crude oil for most of its foreign exchange. This has got to change!

The exportation of food outside the country is therefore a good thing. It will bring in foreign exchange. It is small scale transformation.

What farmers need now is to grow more crops so they will make more money and have more to supply the country.

Why must the rest of Nigeria leave farming & cattle rearing to middle belt & North? Meanwhile the North is seriously looking for oil. If the South get sense they should start farming & rearing cattle.

It's all the foodstuffs that are expensive because of the removal of fuel subsidy...the high costs of fuel disel is the cause of the high costs of beans and foodstuffs...the high costs of transportating this beans to the market is the cause of the beans to be expensive... simple

U must be mentally unstable sir!!! Do u know d cost of international agro input ...mumu ...like pesticides,weedicites,npk,other local input. On d farming process...not to talk of heavy transportation cost from farm to wholesale or retail point...na God go punish u

As long as government withdraw all subsidy on agriculture, cost of farming mplements is high, insecurity every where and ur likes, don't wanna farm, food ll be costly for everyone.

Jesus being a former farmer I'm saddened by your write up. Do you think farmers are responsible for inflations? Pls middle men and marketers should be held responsible. The way they cheat consumers is same way they cheat farmers. That's why I used to say the best way govt can help farming is to buy their product in large quantity. Most agric product are perishables with very little life span on field n once farmer can sell at the appropriate time they suffer heavy losses that if not well manage can run them into bankruptcy straight. This market women union r stronger n effective than any farmers union n they determine the price of crops not the farmers, most times farmers r at their mercy, only during scarcity is when farmers can have upper hand on the negotiating table.

Despite farmer spending on getting land, cutting of land,clearing of land, making ridges, buying fertilizer, buying herbicides, buying pesticides, paying for labours at interval, paying for harvest n sometime etc.

Market women only pay for transportation to where they sell to consumers n those that can afford storage facilities yet a product they buy from farmer at 500naira will go for at least 1500 naira. And go with all the profit. U need to be a farmer to understand this especially if you just invested in farming.

Why are farmers not rich despite the cost of foods but middlemen/market women are?

I'm a beans farmer from benue state and hear this:Fulani have taken over most our farmlands so much so that land when available becomes very expensive.A portion I hired last two years for 6k now jumped to 20k.A bottle of pesticide which is what is needed so much for beans farming has moved from 1800 to 5300 naira.A bag of NPK fertilizer that was 18k has jumped to 53k.Moving from my locality to my farm site that used to be 600 naira is now 1200 with begging, so how do l keep the price that low for you when input cost keep skyrocketing? meanwhile we are selling a custard rubber for 5,500 here

It is high time Nigerians go into farming. Our soil is good for farming unlike some countries, yet they are still performing better than us. Pls even if it is like a garden like farming. Enough of all this rubbish by our farmers/middlemen exploiting us.

Southerners should embrace farming massively. We have the land. Beans grows in the South. I know this because my mum and aunts used to plant beans in their compounds when I was a child.
