I am about rounding off my Masters in France and I fear for the cost of living after school. I have been fortunate to get a scholarship for my studies but I know how tough life is without it. The menial hustles can barely suffice; once I pay rent, feeding and manage to send something to the family back home, it will be a miracle to have #50k left to save per month. If not for the scholarship, I would have been bankrupt long ago.

Getting a job seeker visa also brings a mixture of challenges. I would have to leave the subsidized student accomodation which automatically doubles my rent expenses yet the job seeker visa is still limited to 20 hours per week for a year. Whatever I managed to save in the last 2 years will go down the drain for sure. Banking on securing a job in the french economy as a non speaker is also huge gamble which if it doesn't work, sends me back to square zero.

Trust me, I have tried to learn the language but getting the required proficency will still need extra time. Meanwhile I have left my family for long and the hopes of them joining me here gets bleaker with the draconian, right-wing, anti immigration policies being put out everyday.

I'm thinking of gathering my little savings (circa 6m) and coming back home to start a business or look for a job.

Good or bad decision?

You are in the state of dilemma here. Coming back home with 6m to start up non-existing
business is a big risk that is worth considering. If I am in your shoes, I would try all I could to stay back and arrange myself or thing of another country.

For you to be schooling within the space of two 2 years and still have 6m savings after sending money to your family month in month out is not bad. A lot of people that have been working over 35years back home have never save half of that money in their entire life. Use your tongue to cout your teeth.

Thanks. Other European countries are literally the same. They either require high tuition or student jobs that can barely keep you afloat. I'm still without my family, living in shared tight hostels and slamming my body everyday for no savings.

Friends and former colleagues in Nigeria today earning #300k self still have a better living, they see their wives and kids everyday, live in standard apartments, drive their own cars and still save at least #100k every month. (They do contributions so I know)

The only upside is if I secure a job. That's where the story changes from here.

Thanks, the issue is I am able to have savings because I combine scholarship payouts plus student jobs. Once I'm done, scholarship payments end, rent increases along with health insurance and other benefits students enjoy. Surplus can switch to deficit fast.

It's clear to me now.

If you have an existing business back home that requires money to upgrade it, fine you can consider that. But if you're coming to start up new business in this present economy, the chances to make it is 30/70. And if you're the type that believes in the existence of God, you can prayerfully go into business hoping to get Devine direction from God.

U can use 1.5 to 2m from the money to start up storage business like me.

I just stumbled on this thread while checking out your laptop for sale. My 2 cents. If you can get a scholarship to do your PhD please go for it. Then plot on how to move to Canada legally.
