E no go better for your entire generation for this falsehood. The unification decree of May 1966 was enacted by who? Your grandfather?
You really don't have sense. Did the unification decree abolish regions? The answer is No, because the regions were still there as at when Ironsi was alive.

You cannot revise history. Gowon only finished what Ironsi started.

Decree Number 34 of May 24, 1966, promulgated by Ironsi caused massive unrest in the Northern part of the country as the Northerners had gone against delimiting of regional powers as far back as 1959.
The decree made the centre strong, thereby abolishing the powers granted to the regions. In June 1966, Ironsi began a tour of the country (never to return to Lagos) and met with the Northern elite, assuring them of a united Nigeria. thehistoryville.com/

But, Ironsi was in a hurry to make an impression. In his May broadcast, he declared: “Nigeria shall on the 24th May, 1966 cease to be a federation and shall accordingly as from that day be a republic by the name of the Republic of Nigeria, consisting of the whole territory, which immediately before that day was comprised in a federation.” As federalism was abolished, the regions ceased to exist. From their ashes sprang up a group of territorial areas called provinces. Each region became a group of provinces, with a National Military Government at the centre. The late Head of State had also proposed a new economic plan, but it never saw the light of day.

According to Ndayo Uko, the Decree no.2 was to serve "as a kind gesture to the press" to safeguard himself when he went on later to promulgate the Defamatory and Offensive Decree No.44 of 1966 which made it an "offense to display or pass on pictorial representation, sing songs, or play instruments the words of which are likely to provoke any section of the country." He also as per the proposals of a single man committee passed the controversial Unification Decree No. 34 aimed to unify Nigeria into a unitary state.
Oga please answer these questions, was regions not in existence when Ironsi was alive? Yes or No, Ironsi stated that regions would be called a collection of provinces headed by a provincial administrator. Please tell me what is the definition of regions? Are they not a collection of provinces? Dude this issue has been trashed countless times, you cannot win this argument.

The same gist was said of Local Governments. But it is over 50 years now, and LGs are a disaster.
Disastrous because our Governors arrested local Govt functions and paralyse the constitutional plan..

You mean the same people that didn't develop their states with grit and determination?

We seem to forget that the regions barely lasted four years following independence. It was the corruption and institutional decay that led to the intervention of the military in the first place.

We can simply watch and see.
They were not challenge free but they had leaders that sought-after their regions interest...This system is breeding laziness and bigotry...... Awolowo would have been in the mould of Mao Tse Tong of China, Winston Churchill of UK, Gold Meir of Isreal, even Napoleon Bonaparte of France , as well as that former Singaporean leader Lee Kwan Yew....This Countries had no oil nor resources yet they prospered all thanks to Great Leadership

Following enquiries, the House disowned the bill as the duo of the House spokesman, Akin Rotimi and the Chairman, Rules and Business, Francis Waive said the proposed legislationl was not before committee for deliberation.

However, the drafter of the private bill, Dr Akin Fapohunda, who had earlier hinted our correspondent of his intent to interface with members of the National Assembly ahead of the transmission of the bill to the parliament, on Friday, said he had chosen to send the proposed law to President Tinubu, who may in turn present same to the parliament as executive bill.

Decrees No. 34 and 44 of 1966.

The REASONS Decree 44 of 1966 (which dealt with the spread of highly defamatory written and verbal contents by ethnic bigots in 1966 is right in the screenshot below as stated also by Nnamdi Azikiwe in his pamphlet "The Origins of the 'Nigerian' Civil War."

The regions didn't last because of interruption by External influence of Zik against Awos influence in the western region ....Zik was responsible to ensure that Awo had Alot of Political enemies in the Parliament of western Nigeria despite his Performances ....
The result of that despondency is what we have today ....All Awolowo' s recommendations for the foundation of this Country was jettisoned for petty Jealousy by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and his Ibo tribe ....They are currently the worst hit by such I'll thought approach to Creating a Society

Using the Federal Might ......It was inciting disunity with the promise of a better Federal appointment which was utilized by Zik for Akintola and Gowon for Awolowo .....
Awolowo also instigated the Minority ethnic groups in Eastern to Create their own regions culminating to States Just as Zik was also instrumental to the creation of midwest to spite Awo .....
We now know out enemies better and it's high time We Re strategize this country or else Something worse than Break up is looming

But you have to acknowledge the flaws of the system. It’s vital Nigerians learn the right lessons from history. Not just Nigerian history but world history. The Nigerian experience has taught that a federal system with extensive powers devolved to regions in a multiethnic and tribal society will most likely lead to disintegration.

Two regions had intended to breakaway in a year. We also have the Yugoslav experience. Once the regions got the powers they wanted they tore up the country. What’s worse is that there is no common ground in an ethnic conflict.

Did the military end up not institutionalizing the very corruption they claimed made them intervene? Did the investigations that followed the overthrow of the first Republic really end up revealing any massive corruption which the military alleged was ongoing?
