gidgiddy:
How time flies, its been 31 years since June 12th 1993, the day Bashir Tofa of NRC, and MKO Abiola of SDP, squared up to battle for the Presidency. The elections were later annulled, the fall out would claim MKO's life

However, June 12 is not something that is celebrated amongst us Igbos in the East, for two main reasons.

1. Igbos bore the brunt of the violence that followed June 12th annulment. Various armed Yoruba militias such as OPC sprang up, and wrecked violence all over the West, particularly Lagos. Igbo businesses were looted, burnt or destroyed. Overnight, thousands of Igbos had to jump into vehicles and run back to the East as the violence grew worse, in a phenomenon known as "oso Abiola"(The Abiola run). Some Igbos never returned with their lives.

2. June 12th also exposed to Igbos a certain hypocrisy they see in Yoruba's. It was Northerners that annulled June 12th, it was under the custody of a Northerner that MKO died. On the contrary, Igbo men like Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who conducted June 12th elections, nearly lost his life trying to defend MKO's results. But the Yorubas rarely ever call out the Northerners over June 12th and the death of Abiola

Had it been Igbos that annulled June 12th, had it been under the custody of an Igbo man that MKO died, heavens would have fallen.

June 12th holds no place in the hearts of us Igbos, we are still counting our loses.

You guys keep making my point that this country was a big mistake, the British should never have brought us together. We should correct this by holding a referendum, and going our seperate ways peacefully, just as we were before the coming of the British and their disasterous colonial experiment called Nigeria
You can do that without your stock in trade of LIES,FALSEHOOD,INNUENDOS AND PROPAGANDA.....lol grin

Let your ministers, governors, senators, assembly men, house of representatives members, local government chairmen and councillors come together to sponsor a bill for ammendment of the Nigerian constitution in order to insert the referendum clause.....anything other than this is illegal and unlawful....

What's the point of being in one country just to be fighting and killing each other forever?

You have been hating and envying Yorubas for a very long time since the days of Zik.

This hatred and envy from Ibos is always a good thing because it's a warming that the Ibo are jealous of you and covet all that you have. I say that this envious coveting nature of Ibo is a good thing because the Ibo can never succeed in his criminal coveting of other people's land outside his blighted yeast.

I don't know what is wrong with people like this. We have been fighting, blaming and killing each other since 1960, you are still looking for representatives before before we go our seperate ways and have peace? Were there any representatives when the British was creating Nigeria? Let us come together, agree that the union of Nigeria has been a disastrous failure, hold referendum or plebiscite, go our different ways, as was done in other countries like Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. This fighting each other forever, looking for representatives, will do nobody any good, now or in the future

Here you go with your LIES and MISCHIEF.....you and I know that any referendum talk as the constitution presently stands is ILLEGAL....Your fore bear the ultra unstable Nnamdi Azikiwe saw to that when he opposed the inclusion of referendum and seccessionist clauses in the first constitution. Rather than Ibo to blame your inglorious fore bears you would rather blame Obafemi Awolowo or Bola Ahmed Tinubu for your misfortunes.....NEVER ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY....ALWAYS BLAME OTHERS.....

The country you mention had successions clauses in their constitution which enable them to decide where they want to belong.

Did Zik allowed the same No. Did ironsi and ojukwu allowed Niger delta successions No.

You can't eat your cake and also have it.

Till date no bill or clamour was raise by your representative to have referendum and exit the country.

But their are bills flying around proposing additional state for same S.E is that not hypocrisy.

Hubert Ogunde delivered his Yoruba Ronu Igbophobic speech as far back as 1950s.

It's on record that Abiola had earlier said he can do without Igbos, a statement that prompted Nzeribe rebuttal.
Additionally despite Abiola speech 48% of Igbos still voted for Abiola.
Nzeribe has always been pro establishment, the man sold weapons to Nigeria during Biafran civil war. Moreover as I have shown, he wasn't chief among those who opposed Abiola ascension as the likes of Shonekan, etc were the ring leaders.

Igbos don't have hate for Yorubas, we are too big for that.
We just don't wish to share a country with you guys.

Let's start disproving from you. Were you attacked while leaving the South-West? I mean attack within the South-West region? Be sincere with your answer. Even Northerners having the same tribe with the person that annulled the election were not attacked. What you needed to pass the mob during the crisis was to show Solidarity with protesters by displaying leaves on your cars. No one was hunted or attacked on the basis of their tribes. By no one, I am talking in general sense.

What?? Are We talking about same June 12 or another one??

Myself and 5 others left very early in a friend's car to Benin so I wasn't directly attacked.
Yes solidarity for the protest by leaves was seen but does that change the fact that people's shops and livelihood were raided by hoodlums and criminals??

My roommate who had a shop in Yaba then was a victim. Although it was not politically or tribally motivated just criminals taking advantage of the situatio.

Riots lead to looting of shops but were the shops looted because they belonged to the Igbos? Big companies like Nichemtex and PZ were looted until curview was declared. Did those companies belong to Igbos? Every riot, touts usually take advantage to loot. The bone of contention is that were they looted because they belonged to any tribe? Hell No! Many shops were looted before the curview was declared irrespective of the tribes or religions of the owners.

You teamed up with the North to force us back to Nigeria and even gloat about it.
What do you expect when you forcefully fought to have us in Nigeria? You don't know that you will have to share your spaces with us?

When Malays were tired of Singaporeans, they locked the Singaporean law makers out of their Senate building and did an emergency voting to expell Singapore out of the now defunct Malay Federation!
In your own case, we left you and you fought to have us back against our own wish.
Then you justify it by claiming that Zik single handedly as a superman he is, removed the secession clause from the constitution.

It was Akintola who used the Yoruba Ronu mantra to fan the embers of Igbophobia in Yorubaland in the 1960s.

The funniest thing is that throughout the June 12 saga and even after the death of Abiola nobody held Ibos responsible for anything.
Nobody tribalized it as something to do with Ibos, not even Nzeribe himself was held accountable.
Yoruba saw it strictly as a struggle against dictatorship.
Imagine Nzeribe was a Yoruba man fighting to annul an election won by an Ibo man.
Imagine Daniel Kanu was a Yoruba man doing PR work for a demented dictator who was killing Ibos.

That has been the case of Yoruba and other gang up against Ndiigbo in Nigeria since 1970.
To keep Ndiigbo in Nigeria, you all sacrificed the functional regional systems and created the dysfunctional state system.
To keep Igbos out of power, you scored own goals twice by first voting Buhari and now Tinubu.

You will suffer Ndiigbo , but you will suffer 10x more too, because the Igbo are more resilient than you.

That is a blatant lie
There were strikes and a few protests

The strikes were deep and pervasive. There was no fuel and schools did not work but in the middle of that Nigeria qualified for the World Cup for the first time ever
Violence started after 1994 when Abacha started arbitrary arrests and assassinations, killed Saro Wiwa ,arrested YarAdua Obasanjo and so on.
This was now about democracy and Abacha
Violence of the type such as that against Igbo business has never happened in South West Nigeria even though key Igbo figures like Chukwumerije ,Akpamgbo and Nzeribe were used to frustrate June 12

Ndo.
It was an Ibo man who introduced Unitary system of govt
It was an Ibo led coup who truncated the First republic and introduced military rule

You havent told us what Ibo soldiers were looking for in Ore since it was the Yorubas who brought them back
You havent told us why AKintola was marked for death and why Okpara in the East was spared
Why Ademulegun and Sodeinde were marked for killing but Ojuku and Ironsi spared

We will always be here to burst your lies

But how would you say Igbos were attacked in the east by who and for what reason?

And why would a conflict that wasn't their concern have made them scared of running and leaving Lagos?
If you were an adult in 1993, you would have understood the scenario.

There were tension in the whole country and people thought it could snow ball into a civil war, like what happened in Algeria '1992 presidential election which was cancelled and led to war. Liberia and several other African countries were going through civil wars at that time.
Many people packed their properties and returned to their ancestral homelands and waited to see how things would turn out.

Many Igbos returning home with some of the valuable goods were attacked by Armed robbers (Fellow Igbos) when they reached their towns or close to their towns and their monies /properties stolen. These criminal acts had nothing to do with Politics but pure criminal
activities by local thieves who saw mass returnees of peoples from the cities with lots of cash at a time that there were no E-banking and people even withdrew their monies from the banks.
