They come from history documented both orally by Mande griots and in writing by West African scholars in pre-colonial times. They also come from Arab travelers and Middle Eastern intellectuals who actually met Mansa Musa during his hajj. Go and look for the books "Tarikh al-Sudan" and "Tarikh al-fattash", both of which were written in the pre-colonial era by intellectuals based in Timbuktu.
