My issues is with NLC and TUC...we have about 60 million workers in Nigeria..out of which Federal Government workers are just 1.2 Million...State and Local government workers are less than 15 Million...the remaining are private organisations, and majority are small and medium enterprises.. including private schools, saloons, artisans, cooks, securities, drivers e.t.c..

If government agrees to pay NLC and TUC..who takes care of the other millions of workers? That's the big question.

Immediately new wage is released, prices of goods and services will further go up ..how will these other workers copehuh

That's my headache
No problem.
The national assembly you don't care about only takes from the economy and enrich other countries with their spending. You saw how they bought Toyota jeep instead of innoson
The nlc and tuc you don't like to have extra money are those buying tomatoes in the market.
If you want them to be poor then the economy too will remain poor because they won't be able to make purchases like before Inflation caused by fuel subsidy and naira/dollar policies

All these politicians are always funny, year in year out, their renumeration are being adjusted according to the economic reality with no mind to sacrifice anything for the nation, then they will wake up to advise woes on the head of masses.

Failures that have not succeeded in any parameters of good governance, failed in production of fuel for the nation, failed in provision of stable electricity, failed in provision of infrastructure to aid production, zero security, zero health care, education etc.

They are always quick to bring advise where masses are concerned, blockage of borders to aid non existent food production due to insecurity, one of the fools said if minimum wage is 100k he won't be able to pay his four drivers. Bunch of buffoons exhibiting the narrow and myopic thinking capacity of blacks.

Any company/state not able to pay its workers a decent wage is not a viable company and should be disposed of...merged back into a more viable state. It is ridiculous to argue that because some states/companies are not able to pay a decent wage, therefore, a decent wage should not be made an option for all to be paid. undecided

▶ Any amount less than $64.5 or Naira 94,893.69 is extreme poverty and should not even be considered of worth.
▶ Any amount less than $68 or Naira 102000, which is the former minimum wage adjusted for the approximate 340% depreciation of Naira since February 2023 (Note: the Naira30,000 minimum wage was worth $83 when it was enacted back in 2019), is pretty much not a raise but adjustment to match the value of the current minimum wage right about the time before the current administration took office. I suspect the recent increase of 300% for the Judiciary was such an adjustment made against the Naira depreciation level. Naira 124,000 or $83 really should be where Labor begins its negotiating for a raise from.
▶ At the federal level though, anything less than N250,000 should be rejected by federal workers. Given the padding senior workers at the federal level freely give themselves, I see no reason why some of that extra padding should not work its way down and across the board to other Federal workers.
What is a poverty line?
A poverty line, also called a poverty threshold, is a set amount of income below which it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for people to afford essentials like food and shelter. Each country determines its poverty line by calculating the cost of meeting minimum needs. Households with incomes below this line are considered to be living in poverty.
The international poverty line serves as a standard for measuring extreme global poverty and was recently adjusted to $2.15 a day to reflect the rising cost of necessities and adjust for inflation. Since 1990, it has increased from $1 to $2.15, reflecting the rising cost of living.

SwissMass:
The problem with these wages is that the more you earn, the more you spend because, immediately , goods and services will increase in prices
This is ridiculous reasoning. Presidency, Senator, HOR, & all political office holders all gave themselves raises not too long ago in that same Nigeria. Are they currently complaining that they are having to spend more on goods and services? Why is it that it is the Nigerian people, many of whom have not received a raise in over 4 years that are screaming at the biting cost of prices of goods and services instead? undecided

Inflation as it stands today is not a result of Nigerians being paid more money but a result of recent APC policies many of which were implemented during this current administration. So, why should the fear of inflation be used as a weapon against Nigerians demanding better pay when inflation, as it stands, was not caused by the same receiving better pay? Why the nonsense scare tactics? undecided

Adjusted for headline inflation, food inflation, fuel price increase and foreign exchange movement, the current wage level has lost its value and would need to be tripled to restore the purchasing power of the working class. An average worker, whether they are on public or private sector payrolls, the analysis suggests, will need an almost 200 per cent pay raise to maintain the 2019 utility level, otherwise, they will slip further below the poverty index.

■ I don't really understand why everybody is shouting 62k this and that. The 62k is for level 1 step 1, which in reality nobody is in that level because even olevel employees starts from level 4, and graduate employees starts from level 8.
■ We should also remember that this minimum wage only affects less than 10% of Nigerian workers.
■ Hence it will be unfair to the rest of Nigerians who will not benefit from the minimum wage if most of state resources are used just to pay salaries to only government workers.
■ Who will pay those in private sector? What about the jobless?
Non-graduates, Level 0 workers deserve to be paid abject-poverty-level wages, is what you are saying? lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

3. As it stands, most of those state resources are barely ever seen by most Nigerians. So, why would the same Nigerians now think it unfair if the same resources are re-routed from the sinkholes where they currently feed, into the pockets of workers who deserve to be enumerated for work done? undecided

4. Who currently pays those in the private sector? The companies they work for, right? undecided

The Minimum Wage Act was enacted in 2019 and is dated 26th March 2019
According to the Act, certain categories of workers are exempted from receiving the NMW as their monthly salary. Section 4 of the Act, states that the Act does not apply to workers who work on;
● part time basis
● commission or piece – rate
● establishments employing less than 25 persons
● workers in seasonal employment like agriculture; and,
● any person employed in a vessel or aircraft to which laws regulating merchant shipping or civil aviation apply.

These categories of workers are specifically exempted from the application of the national minimum monthly wage and employers can pay them an otherwise agreed sum for their wages.

■I don't think it works that way. Goods and services have already increased in price. I think it's the same argument for private sector. They increased the prices of good and services but failed to increase the salaries of their workers along with it. Who is currently responsible for the wages of those non-governmental workers at this point? Government or the private sector? undecided

2. I don't follow. Whether or not the government agrees to pay NLC or TUC, those private-sector workers will continue to depend solely on their private-sector employers, right? So, what exactly is your issue with the private sector not being directly paid even after all of this by the government? undecided

3. New wages have not been released in over 4 years yet inflation has climbed to over 35% with no end in sight. Prices of goods and services have risen over 400% at this point and it is expected to continue to rise. The new reality of things in Nigeria, a reality caused not by an increase in wages but by policies implemented by the government, is responsible for the high inflation rate and high cost of goods and services. So what is the reason behind this inane tactic of trying to pin inflation instead of an increase in wages? undecided

That is how labor laws work. Employers are expected to pay taxes and based on reports received, the Government is mostly able to determine whether a particular employer complies or not. Another way is having individuals file suits or petitions with the government against employees refusing to pay the minimum wage for services rendered. undecided

These "issues" are non-issues really since they have not stopped and will not stop the same government from enacting new laws. Your duty as a citizen is to make sure that laws are in your collective favor and also push to ensure they are enforced so that you benefit from them when it comes your turn to. undecided
