No one is talking about how the 2nd division of the Nigerian military was wiped out more than 4 times during the war and the last that was heard of them was that their GOC had gone on self imposed exile, nor is anyone talking about how the 3rd armoured division was reduced to less than 1000 men from 33,000 initial squad . And all these was despite the backing of soviet union, British empire, Egypt, Arab world, Chad, Cameroon and niger republic
chinedu both parties had foreign backing

I was at a bar to relax on the island yesterday night . The hypeman(obviously an Igbo) got to the stage ,took the Mic and began to yarn dust.

The Igbos stay in Lekki ,Vi,Ajah and other posh areas while the Yorubas stay in Epe ,Olokonla, Sangotedo, Ikorodu etc .

The Igbos drive Benz, Lamborghini,Lexus while the Yorubas drive Korope,Molue.

The Igbos drink Hennessy,Azul while the Yorubas drink Shepe, Seaman.

After saying these rubbish ,he observed the guest countenance and said nobody should attack him after the show .

After a while ,he declared that the Igbos present are broke ,perhaps to retrace his steps and appeal to his Yoruba guests.

In my understanding, such statements are false, tribalistic and capable of leading to violence.

Such delicate matter should not be considered as joke because a lie repeated several times can be seen as truth ,it can set the course for violence in which the starter might not be able to contain it.

First to do no dey pain ,when people respond accordingly to such irresponsible statement, that's when they switch to victim mode and call others bigot and that they are after them .
Just a quick one. Ajah is not located on an Island. Ajah is located on Lekki Peninsula which is NOT completely surrounded by water. An Island such as Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Ilashe, and Victoria Island (Iruland) are COMPLETELY surrounded by water, hence are called islands. That's out of the way.

So, I would have liked it if you called out the the name of the so-called Hypeman who made that irresponsible statement and also the bar name so that people would learn to vet or screen out those crappy and highly inflammatory jokes that offend the human sensibilities in multicultural settings before coming on stage to perform. The areas where posh gated estates exist are built on leased lands owned by the Yoruba indigenes who have Oba's (or traditional kings) ruling all over those areas. At the end of the lease period, the properties will be DEMOLISHED and the leased lands will be taken back by the Yoruba indigenes and/or the Lagos State government depending on who they got the lands from if they refuse to RENEW the lease. Many Yoruba folks in Nigeria and in the Diaspora own mansions in those posh areas as well.

I've listened in the past to some of these uninformed comedians mostly from the East of Nigeria and sometimes the South of Southern states making unguarded or unmeasured jokes about Yoruba folks (who are a major African ethnic group with more than 50 million people in population and are indigenous to 3 to 4 major West African countries of Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana) that are patently false and insulting to the sensibilities, and after reading your post, I clearly AGREE that the comments the so-called Hypeman made is highly irresponsible! The fact that he got a negative reaction from the audience at the Ajah bar shows that he himself realized his errors in his attempt to inject humor which ended up sounding insulting.

I was at an international conference at Sheraton Hotel in Maryland over fifteen years ago and the young male comedian who came on stage cracked the usual stereotypical dry joke in a mix of pidgin English and English about Yorubas "who too dey fear" and Ibos "who no dey fear" and he got some murmurs and negative feedback from the crowd. His accent sounded very funny so some guests laughed it off. At the end of the program, I saw the young male comedian (who was then in his twenties) and we both talked. He told me he is from Anambra State and I told him NOT to ever crack that kind of ethnic joke that was insulting and condescending because it would put off those who might want to use his services later. He bowed respectfully to me and apologized for cracking that silly joke. His accent was funny though and he was indeed good with some of his joke deliveries. These ethnic stereotypes must NEVER be allowed at public events or anywhere at all. They start off as false beer parlor stories or family gists by some bigoted parents from homes before spreading to schools and the larger societies.

There are CULTURAL differences worldwide and many ethnic groups detest people who are VERY loud and NOT humble, thereby leading to a culture clash. If a person is new in a place which has a different ethnic group or language from yours, learn to study there sensitivities so that you do offend them with your words, actions, and inactions. This is what happened in the case of that young male comedian at Sheraton Hotel back in the day. He was relatively new to Lagos and Yoruba folks (like other migrant new comedians or Hypemen and did not understand that making those kinds of ethnic jokes in social or business meetings was highly offensive and politically incorrect.

Even Chinua Achebe wrote in his last infamous book before he passed on about the Ibos and their NOISY EXHIBITIONISM and their LACK of HUMILITY and QUIETNESS as seen in the excerpt from Achebe's book below. One of them here on page one of this thread was irresponsibly saying that it's the normal Ibo behavior but when you make narcissistic or supremacist comments or stereotypical taunts at social or business meetings in a multiethnic setting, you end up offending the sensibilities of others.

Igbos Are Noisy Exhibitionists & They Lack Humility And Quietness - China Achebe

“I will be the first to concede that the Igbo as a group is NOT without its FLAWS. Its success can and did carry deadly penalties: the dangers of hubris, overweening pride, and thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or, even worse, than can obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of crude SHOWINESS. There is no doubt at all that there is a STRAND in contemporary Igbo behavior that can OFFEND by its NOISY exhibitionism and DISREGARD for humility and quietness.” - Chinua Achebe

I don't care where you are from ,I don't care about anyone's origin but deals with them based on their values.

2023 elections reaction is not enough ,you can't prevent others from voting in your abode based on their choice of candidates, won by over 80% but called others that shared their votes bigots ,you don't make reckless statement threatening the heritage of locals ,transfer PVC and attempt to subdue others when they're not moo . You don't single out others VIPs that support opposing views for attack why you're silent on your own VIPs that did the same .

I have many friends from other ethnicities including Igbos but they don't insult my heritage cos that will be the end of our relationship if they do .

There are different ways to respond, after making such statements,no Igbo man displayed himself(I'm not saying none couldn't) but I simply bought things that's why I said he retraced his steps and said the Igbos present are broke .

Of course you don't expect me to break bottles and make the hypeman to say Yorubas are agbero and Igbos are Bankers ?

You don't beat a child and tell him not to cry or how to cry . If people pushing back is called hate I don't know what the people pushing should be called .

Relationship is sweet when everyone knows their bound and they're not trying to stretch it by testing the water with one leg .
the funny thing is that you will wail from now till tomorrow you can’t do igbos anything they no born you well

Wonderful insight and some things are noted for future reference.

I decided not to mention the bar name for security purposes but I will make sure I express my displeasure next time I go there .

I'm glad you gained some deep insights from my original post to you.

I absolutely AGREE with your last paragraph. The management of that bar must be told what happened so that they will be guided next time NOT to allow any so-called Hypeman or guest comedian to make highly irresponsible and insulting comments all in the name of cracking silly ethnic jokes in a multicultural social setting.

Just as I told that young comedian at Sheraton Hotel over 15 years ago, who respectfully admitted to me his social blunder in cracking that insidious and condescending ethnic joke targeted at Yorubas is the way all others must be approached till they STOP. I also once read within the last 10 years complaints by the Muslims that some of these same comedians were denigrating Muslims by using Islamic names that have meanings to crack jokes that portrayed them as illiterates and poor people. They were told to stop using names such as Kafilat, Muyibat, Kafayat, etc, to crack silly jokes.

Others reading this NL thread too will learn NOT to taunt others or do the kind of thing that Hypeman did at the Ajah bar you went to again because Ajah is right on Yoruba soil with Yoruba traditional rulers, so that kind of inappropriate joke was unacceptable.

Cheers.

Firstly there is no proof that this incident actually took place.
And even if it did, there is no proof that the so called hypeman is igbo,he could even be a yoruba.it is a known fact that these entertainers sometimes use themselves, their family or tribe to generate content.
For several years Warri comedians have been using their family poverty to crack joke, each and every one of them.
