Good day bros. I need your advice. I am running on a tight budget. And I have around 200-230k to purchase a very good laptop which I can use for heavy duty programming or design works. Is this laptop okay? Lenovo Thinkpad T480- 8th gen core i5, backlit keyboard, 8gb ram 256GB SSD. Help me please.

Used over 7 ThinkPads, they are the best, however if you could bump it up to 16gb that would be better, if you're doing coding, I'd advise using Linux for memory usage. I use a Thinkpad and planning to buy 2 more for work. all the best |

qtguru:boss man!! ✋ ✋ By bumping it up it's something I could ask them to do for me right? As in the ram. Thanks for the advice. Appreciate. Modified: I know it seems like a yeye question. How much would it cost to bump it up to 16gig and how would I know it's been increased..will it reflect when I check the pc details? And do you mean installing Linux. I'm lost kinda Sorry for plenty questions. I have so many to ask you especially, but let me cross this bridge. I plan to go get the laptop this Wednesday. Thanks |

TheFinesseKid:Why not fire questions, so 8gb is not bad but for heavy duty coding 16gb is the standard but if you can start with 8gb and upgrade when money comes then that's fine, usually the extra ram could be around 15 -20k difference. Linux is an operating system, it tends to be low on memory usage compared to windows, and is a good OS for coding since most of the servers are Linux based. But if 8gb is all you can afford then you can go with that. |

If they have the T480s, go for that one though, but this is also ok TheFinesseKid: |

qtguru:thanks for taking the time out to read my message. I'll definitely be upgrading it then. My issue is I'm buying it at Ikeja. Will they be able to help me install Linux as well? And if I install Linux will I still be able to update it the way windows is updated? I've never used Linux before but with your recommendation I will like to try it. Which variant of Linux would you recommend? Sorry for the plenty questions. I'm new to it. Thanks. Lol. There's still more I'd ask after I get my laptop. But this is all there is for now sir. Thanks once again. |

I doubt they can in CV, but you can start with Windows for now, in the future just have Linux in plain view and yes you can update. I've used it for 7 years plus, it's very stable but I'll admit it can be complex too sometimes, I'd advise using Kubuntu and Plasma it's like Windows. |

qtguru:Or even Linux mint, that's what I'm currently using |
| Re: Advice On Choice Laptop Please by KushLyon(m): 6:18pm On Jun 23, 2024 |
TheFinesseKid:You can have windows and Linux on the same machine if you want (that's what I did). There are tutorials on YouTube to help you install Linux when you're ready |

KushLyon:okay. How do I get this Linux mint sir |
| Re: Advice On Choice Laptop Please by qtguru(m): 9:13am On Jun 24, 2024 |
KushLyon:I've never tried Linux Mint but I'm happy with KDE Plasma or awesomeWM, I like the dark theme in Plasma but Linux mint is good too. |

TheFinesseKid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10f4899srvc?si=4ZzlXK82zBQ56mx9 That is the video I used. It will tell you everything you need to know about installing Linux mint. If you don't have a flash drive go do the installation, you can just use a memory card of at least 8gb and a card reader |

TheFinesseKid:A Lenovo Thinkpad would suffice. You can be on the lookout for a T480. Please note the alphabet. It is a T, not E or L or Ideapad. T480’s price has been going up lately. T480 is a 14 inch laptop. If you want a 15 inch, you can pick the T580 lenovo. Same internals, just a bigger screen and a bigger keyboard with number pad. This would cost you almost 10k more. T580 is still cheaper and you should get a clean one at least 8gb RAM and at least 256GB SSD within your budget. Dont get HDD. If you can get 16gb and 512GB in that range, the better. When getting the laptop, please ensure the following: The screen is 1080p or more. Full HD and not HD The BIOS is not locked. Computrace is not activated on the BIOS There is no active supervisor password on the BIOS Ensure it has backlit keyboard. Test before paying. Confirm it is SSD. i5 or i7 intel will work. Check battery and ensure it has two batteries. If one battery, skip. By Roysy. |

LEEUWENHOEK:please sir..how would I even know if it has all the bIOS password stuff and screen (Full HD) specifications if I'm getting UK used? And the two batteries you are talking about..will I see two batteries inside the laptop or they'll give me a spare? I'm confused. Please help |

Maybe I’ll sound differently. Get a Dell of same price. Like Latitude 5480 or 5490. It’s even 200k to 250k depending on location. Reason: I’ve used Two Lenovo PC of same price range. The older one develop a fault of going off by itself automatically whenever I’m editing a picture on Paint 3D. Mind you, I leaves so many tabs OPENED on chrome. Each tab consumes higher ram. The pc was on 8gb ram. I have to sell it off cheaper and I told the buyer about the error. He changed to new ram and serviced the PC (they added paste/coolant). I got another Lenovo cox of the smooth/silent keyboard. I used it for about 6 months. No lagging. It finally developed same issue. Omo. And this second one runs on SSD since it’s believed to be faster. I’m using Dell now. For some few months. I’ve not witnessed it. That’s my personal experience with Lenovo ThinkPad. Not general opinion 👌 |

Guys so I bought the laptop. It displays two batteries. It was charging when I got there. I started using it and checking the specs and camera etc. So it was 85 when I unplugged it and then I switched it off. When I turned it on it was displaying 81. I thought nothing of it and took it home. I got home and turned it on and saw 49%. Now I'm charging it and it stopped charging at 92% with the battery one at 100% and battery 2 at 80%. I complained to the seller. He says I should unplug it and start using it and charge it to full again when it gets to 2%. I am confused here. Is it normal for the battery 2 to stop charging at 80 percent? Please help.me.

Ybholy:now that you said it. I might have to change to a Lenovo. Thanks for the input. Please help.me address this issue. I dropped an update sir. |
| Re: Advice On Choice Laptop Please by Ybholy(m): 8:28pm On Jun 25, 2024 |
TheFinesseKid:The seller supposed inform you. It’s advisable to buy new/extra battery for a used PC that uses removable battery. Battery is on higher side too. Got one 18k few months ago. Non removable Battery of PC is 30k to 50k up now. Note: The double battery icon you’re seeing isn’t an issue. It means you can plug in external battery pack to the PC but they don’t send it along down here and it’s not a thing here. So, you’d try to talk to the seller to replace the batter or you buy a new one. Don’t wait for some days o. If he’s kind, he can change it with another one if he has exact one in his stock, if not, you’ll buy another one or manage it. |
