Solar Or Generator; Which Should I Go For by frankobobby(op): 1:55pm On Jun 24, 2024
I am thinking on purchasing a 4.5kva generator, buy someone suggested I save up more and go for inverter (which will cost more). I just need to power a smart tv, laptop, some bulbs, then in the future, a fridge.
Should I buy the generator now, then focus on other projects? Or save up (probably till year ending) to get solar?

NB: our light is almost constant (band A), and I barely use electricity for more than 3hrs daily.
Pls, move to Frontpage

Buy a generator and leave all these their solar shyt alone, na person wey wan misadvise you go tell you to buy inverter or solar, its not 100 percent reliable and disappoints some days and parts are costlier, but with generator just fill diesel or fuel depending on the type and you are good to go.
Make sure to purchase a noiseless generator suitable for residential areas.

God for battery and Inverter without solar panels
listen to this advice, since u are on band A. Get a hybrid inverter and batteries you can always add panels later when needed.

Theres nothing like noiseless generator, plus hav you added cost of fuel and maintenance in the long run. It is more cost effective to get solar in the long run than buying gen. Just get a good installer that will install for u using original products. There are pipu here on nairaland that have been on solar for more than 5years, if it where generator, do you how much that will cost, running gen everyday for 5years straight.

Hi OP. Let me tell you something- fuel price like everything else will increase sooner or later. Add engine oil price and maintenance price and you will see that generator does not make any kind of sense in this Tinubu economy.
Since you have very regular power, what I would do if I were you would be to contact Cooldipo/Alejobs and get one of his MPS powerbanks, the bigger and more capable the better. Once you have that, start saving money to get 1 or 2 600W solar panels, sachet inverter and charge controller. This is because in case power supply in your area starts getting bad, you can get a technician to hang solar panel for you that will be recharging your Cooldipo powerbank.

But won't it be a waste of inverter or battery power since there's almost constant light here

it wont be a waste, you would only use it when neccessary, and that will also make ur setup last very long for u. I would choose solar over gen, anyday anytime. Please make sure you use a trusted installer. Like someone earlier mentoined, nepa is not reliable, 2day u are on band A, 2moro ur transformer fit blow. But with solar u are energy independent and it is completely FREE after installation, all u need is sunlight.

Your budget, which I guess, is about ₦400,000 isn't enough for an Inverter System (no solar panels) I would have recommended. This system would be less expensive, in the long run, especially since you have almost constant electricity.

The generator may look cheap now, but when you factor in fuel consumption and its service you would see that the system is better. That said, even with Solar Inverter System, having a backup, say generator, is a wise decision.

My advice is this: If you can't wait to save about ₦800,000 (Yes, ₦800,000! I feel you want equality) for the Inverter System, buy the generator.
Re: Solar Or Generator; Which Should I Go For by dacool1(m): 8:17pm On Jun 25, 2024
Since you are on band A.i would suggest generator, but considering the appliances you want to power for now. You can go for inverter and battery only. The only downside to this is if there power outage for more than a day.

Get a small inverter let's say a 1000 watts (continuous power) puresine wave inverter like 70k to 80k
100ah Lifepo4 battery pack less than 300k
Charger about 30k.

You are good to go for about 7years without any other cost with proper usage and handling. You can keep adding to your battery bank if there's need to increase back up.

Yes. The MPS2 and up can do that easy. Runtime should be around 4-5 hours for the MPS2 and more for other variants. The guy has MPS2, 3, 4 and even 5. I have the MPS2 and MPS3 and I'm using the latter at the moment to power fan in this cold weather, cos I gotta be cold to focus well. smiley
Contact Alejopbs/Cooldipo and see what he's selling.

This is Nigeria. Relying on NEPA is ultimate foolishness. There's a good reason every serious business has 2 or more generators, or solar setup.

Yeah, light might be very good where OP is, but that could very easily change tomorrow. Or the FG might wake tomorrow and decided to triple power costs.

You're absolutely correct
I'll be able to raise 800k by August. I don't intend on using panels for now

Fuel generator is important
Solar installation is okay.

But on a budget, go for Solar Generator. It’s all-in-one compact battery pack + inverter. It charges with solar panel & also with NEPA light.
