Are tear gas canisters meant to detonate or difuss gas?

That's a gory scene right there. From the first picture, it's very clear that his palms got ripped off from the rest of his hands. I NEVER knew that tear gas canisters can be that deadly to the person holding them.

I was thinking the cannisters are suppose to diffuse gas when activated not detonate like a grenade.

Over the years, I've seen protesters and rioters worldwide picking up activated or unactivated teargas canisters to throw back at the anti-policemen with their bare hands. After seeing this Kenyan video, it's just NOT advisable for anyone to do that.

Further investigations turned out other cases of exploding teargas canisters which have occured around the world including Nigeria with severe consequences for the hands and eyes of the policemen involved. A teargas cannister can indeed explode. The Weblinks below shed more light on this fact.

I feel empathy for the Kenyan senior policemen. If he had clairvoyant insights that he would lose his hands on that day, he would have feigned illness in order to avoid coming to work in the morning. But then again, it is what it is. I hope he can get good prosthetic arms so he can engage in a meaningful occupation and I'm counting on all Kenyans (including those protesters) to rally round him to raise extra funds for him regardless of whether he has insurance cover or not.

Now that you mention it like this, I think manufacturers make them explode deliberately. So protesters should sue them.
