Ironsi appointing them was just a ruse to make them believe he had nothing to do with the coup when in effect he planned it alongside Azikiwe.
Why go through the trouble of killing Northern leaders just to place Northerners in every strategic key position in the country...

He was already Major General and on more than one occasion he disobeyed Nnamdi Azikiwe in favour of Tafewa Balewa...

Doesn't sound like a typical Northern hater to me.

Murtala was Obasanjo's Boss; So why not Honoura Boss who died in service that you worked with?
You can honour your boss, but you don't use the countries property to do so.

Murtala Mohammed and Obasanjo were military dictators, they took power illegitimately, then used it to honour themselves

A country's currency is where you put outstanding people who have contributed positively to the country, or humanity

Not someone like Murtala Mohammed whose first coup killed over 300 people, the same man who led the second division that commited genocide in Asaba, a man who was recalled from the war due to abysmal failure, a military dictator who came to power by the barrel of the gun.

Only a country with very low standards would put a person like Murtala Mohammed on it currency, and Obasanjo should apologise for doing so.

David Ejoor was not Igbo, and according to the guy I mentioned, Aguiyi Ironsi wanted to kill David Ejoor, why empower a man you wish to kill?
Why feed a Chicken you’re intending to kill?

Murtala Mohammed the great soldier who created 19 state. Some people lack knowledge of history.
I know he was terribly defeated when he tried to invade Onitsha, he had advantage in weapons, advantage in numbers, more food and supply and yet 90% of his troops were killed, only incompetent leadership could achieve that.

His expertise was in plotting coups and shooting defenceless civilians, he was cunning but was never intelligent (if he was intelligent he might still be alive)

Same can be said about Ironsi...........if he had sufficient grey matters in his frontal lobe, he too might still be alive, today.

Ironsi was as dumb.. b as they come. No wonder , Nzeogwu reffered to him as a pen-pushing desk sergeant.

Why do you assume that the Northerners gives a rat-arse how you perceive ironsi after his boys had just eliminated their (Northerners ') elite ? Ironsi was a dead-man walking, the moment he took over the govt of the day, at gunpoint. .

Yeah that's the thing

The man who personally killed Ahmadu Bello was Nzeogwu Chukwuma.

When he (Nzeogwu) died, Gowon gave orders for his corpse to be transported to Kaduna, he was then given a respected military funeral in Kaduna.

The man who killed Northern elites was buried in the North with respect.

Your mistake is thinking soldiers follow the same moral code as civilians, all this talk about revenge is complete nonsense.

Yeah, Nzeogwu was given a "respected military funeral" but that was after they plucked out his eyes from their sockets.

Are you trying to infer that the July coup was not a revenge coup? Pray then, tell us what it (July 1966 coup) was. Probably a home-coming party for the new clueless illegal head of state. grin

Quick question why did Murtala Mohammed and TY Danjuma plot a coup against Gowon?

Why did Dimka plot against Murtala Mohammed?

Why did Babaginda plot against Buhari?

Were they all about revenge?

The July coup was for a variety of reasons

The main reason was Power they wanted to rule, they don't want to be number 2 they want to be number 1 (by 'they' I mean the likes of Murtala Mohammed and TY Danjuma)

The next reason was promotion, many soldiers saw a chance to get promoted and killing Igbo Officers made sense, after all if Igbo Officers were being killed someone has to get promoted to take their place, a good career plan (the likes Dimka enter this category)

And then we have fear, some soldiers genuinely feared that they were going to get killed or at least have their lives destroyed by Igbo Officers so it was a 'i will kill you before you kill me situation'

We also have solidarity, "my friends are doing something bad but if I don't join them I would be ostracized" this mindset is even stronger in the army (majority of the soldiers fell in this category).

Lastly sadism, some people are just sadists who enjoy killing and watching others suffer and sometimes they join the army.

Obviously they are not foolish enough to admit their true motives, saying "I am fighting for revenge" sounds much better than saying "I am fighting for a promotion"

As for the plucking of Nzeogwu eyes once again you confuse army with civilians

The eyes were a trophy, it's like the way the British would steal African gods and store them well in museums although they didn't believe in them.

They plucked his eyes doesn't mean they hate him, they kept his eyes because they saw him as a great man hence they can boast that "I have a great man's eyes".

Its not passing the blame, it is what it is!. These guys you guys keep shouting coup upandan were small boys. Since then we have had many presidents and governors in their 50s-70s yet the country keeps falling.

This tells you the country is fundamentally wrong

Its convenient to tell these lies but the prime minister and sardana couldn't protect themselves even though they were forewarned.

Was Ironsi not also told about a pending coup against him, what did he do?
ShinnBet:
The E-Branch of the Nigerian Police did brief the PM of a possible coup.

The Sarduna reported to the police of strange military excersices being conducted around his residence a few days to his assassination.

The police do not have the powers to arrest officers on suspicion of a coup.

It was up to the military police on orders of the Army chief to do so but Ironsi sat on it and did nothing. The Sarduna's complaints if strange military movement around his home was dismissed by Ironsi as being simply military training excersices.

You are just clinging on straws now that you lying boat is sinking .

of course, the Northerners thought Nzeogwu was a "great man" after he singlehandedly
murder their political and religious leader in cold blood.

Keep deluding urself like iya ibeji who, when asked, responded that her boys are in London doing great things, when the whole village knows that her twins are in prison for armed robbery!

Nepotism..

Those are some of the atrocities your fore-fathers committed..

We’re you told they also made an Igbo Man U.I & Unilag Vc? Igbos introduced nepotism into Nigeria system. Azikwe was the father of nepotism..

It was part of why they destroyed our regionalism, with the believe that they’d be able to have power to control over all..
Gen Ironsi also tried to remove Prof Ishaya Audu who was the VC of ABU Zaria and replace him with Prof Edozien

Lt Col Katsina who was Gov of the the North resisted it , but it was the July revenge Coup that finally halted Gen Ironsi's plan to replace Ishaya Audu

Prof Edozien later became the Traditional Ruler of Asaba

Thanks for this historical insights. You should open a thread about this ,you know....because it was obvious the Ibo high elite were all in the know and behind the events of January 1966 but the Ibo propagandists always try to paint a picture of an all inclusive Coup because of the mischievous inclusion of Major Ademoyega who obviously did not recognise himself as a puppet in the hands of the Ibos like Ifeajuna and Nzeogwu.
Igbos are making themselves endangered species in Nigeria by their cunning ways. No other tribes trust them. They have proven to be traitors over the years.

When Obasanjo was military dictator in the 70's, he put the face of General Murtala Mohammed on the 20 Naira note. This was a huge error because Murtala Mohammed is not a role model for anyone. He was a murderous coup plotter, war criminal and military dictator. There was nothing positive about the man

How do you put Murtala Mohammed alongside the likes of Herbert Macaulay, Zik, Awolowo and Sarduana?

When Obasanjo returned as civilian, he had the opportunity to correct this national embarrassment of putting Murtala Mohammed on the N20 note. Obasanjo introduced the N200 and N500 and put eminently qualified people on it. He had the power to remove Murtala from the N20 Naira, but did not

Obasanjo needs to tender an apology for not correcting the mistake he made.
Is it because Murtala dealt with you guys during the Biafran war ?

You guys are seriously hopeless, you are suffering from confirmation bias

Despite the fact that Aguiyi Ironsi placed Northerners in key positions of power you believe he was evil because he allegedly tried to replace a VC, a VC post that didn't have value to his regime and he didn't even do it merely allegedly tried to

Then you claim the Governor of the North resisted it, while not mentioning that it was Aguiyi Ironsi that made Lt Kastina, Governor.

We were discussing the VC Of Universities

Gen Ironsi wanted replace Professor Ishaya Audu and
to Appoint Dr Edozien the VC of Ahmadu Bello University
at a time when the VC Issue was still raging both in University
of Lagos and Ibadan

How many Yorubas did Gen Ironsi place in Positions of Power?
In the Promotions only one Yoruba Officer Olutoye was promoted and he was in the Education Corp

17 Eastern Military Officers were promoted by Ironsi despite there being a one year moratorium on
Promotions because of the Coup

By the way Col Benjamin Adekunle and Obasanjo were due for Promotion but were passed over

Truth always Triumphs over Propaganda because God Almighty reigns with Truth and Righteousness

You know he ruled for just 6 months right? 6 months to rule a very corrupt and unstable country that just had a coup, imagine judging Tinubu by his first 6 months.

He didn't promote certain officers in a six month span meant he deserved to die and thousands should follow him..

Like I said confirmation bias.

Do you know that Lt Col Wellington Bassey from Calabar was Gen Ironsi's senior in the Army Officer Corp by over 3 years?

The Story of what Azikiwe did to hold Bassey back so as to stop Bassey from emerging as the First head of the Nigerian Army is almost unbelievable

If you don't want me to tell you the story please don't get on my Nerves

Azikiwe committed atrocities to make sure Gen Ironsi overtook Bassey
It was Wellington Bassey that the British had been preparing to take over as the First Nigerian Head of the Army because he was the most Senior Officer

Wellington Bassey had commanded the independence day Parade but his ordeal with Azikiwe who wanted to get rid of him for Ironsi's sake began immediately after The British Empire got back on the boat to London

Bassey was even on the list of Officers to be assasinated in the Jan Coup 1966 but he managed to Escape

Bassey was from Calabar and if you know History you know that Calabar People and Azikiwe didn't exactly see eye to eye to the extent that Azikiwe removed the Capital of the Eastern Region from Calabar to.Enugu despite being advised not to do so by the British

The British had good reasons to advise Azikiwe against it
For a Start Calabar was a Port City while Enugu was not.
The British understood that the Eastern Capital being at Calabar could have done a lot to stimulate the Eastern Regions Economic and Commercial development just as was going on in Lagos at the same time

There is no confirmation bias involved
We are even holding back a lot of information because we recognize that Children cannot be held responsible for the sins of their Fathers

Wellington Bassey was from Calabar
Ironsi was from Umuahia

From the 1954 London Gazette below you can see their commission dates into the Officer Corps

Wellington Bassey from Calabar was commissioned with Seniority in April of 1944 and Ironsi from Umuahia was commissioned with Seniority on October of 1947 more than 3 years later

If we tell you the Story of what Azikiwe did just to make sure Wellington Bassey would not become the Head of the Nigerian Army instead of Ironsi you yourself will not be happy with Azikiwe

It was Yakubu Gowon who finally promoted Wellington Bassey to Brigadier
