A new survey found that almost 40% of companies posted a fake job listing this year — and 85% of those companies interviewed candidates for fake jobs

If you aren’t hearing back from a job you applied to, it might be because it’s not real.

A new survey from Resume Builder revealed that 39% of hiring managers said their company posted a fake job listing in the past year.

The disheartening results show that among those who posted fake jobs, “approximately 26% posted one to three fake job listings, 19% posted five, 19% posted 10, 11% posted 50, 10% posted 25, and 13% posted 75 or more.”

The fake jobs ranged from entry-level roles to executive positions, said Resume Builder, which surveyed 649 hiring managers.

Companies said they are posting fake jobs for a laundry list of reasons, including to deceive their own employees.

More than 60% of those surveyed said they posted fake jobs “to make employees believe their workload would be alleviated by new workers.”

Sixty-two percent of companies said another reason for the shady practice is to “have employees feel replaceable.”

Two-thirds of companies cited a desire to “appear the company is open to external talent” and 59% said it was an effort to “collect resumes and keep them on file for a later date.”

What’s even more concerning about the results: 85% of companies engaging in the practice said they interviewed candidates for the fake jobs.

“It’s a concerning scenario, particularly when these misleading postings originate from HR departments — the very entities entrusted with shaping accurate perceptions of their organizations,” Resume Builder’s Chief Career Advisor Stacie Haller said.

“Whether it’s to create an illusion of company expansion or to foster a sense of replaceability among employees, such practices are not acceptable,” she added.

Haller said workers “deserve transparency about the companies they dedicate their time to, rather than being led astray by false representations.”

She also called it “deplorable” that companies are purposely “undermining employees’ sense of value and security.”

But the practice doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon. Almost 70% of those who posted the phony jobs told Resume Builder that fake job listings positively impacted revenue. Employers also reported the listing had a positive impact on “employee morale” — although it’s not clear how.

“Companies engaging in this practice not only tarnish their reputation but also sabotage their long-term prospects,” Haller said. “Deceptive practices erode trust, dissuading potential applicants from considering them in the future as viable employers.”

So, next time, if the hiring manager didn't get back to you, don't beat yourself up. It might just be another fake job from a real company. HR managers, this is unfair!

Experienced this as a staff of a company, where I got to see my exact role being listed as a vacant one on a job listing website.

I couldn't ask the HR why but was scared. It became worst few days later when the lady directly below me came in to tell me the management called her to a meeting and had informed her of their plans to make her understudy me for three months before coming to announce her as my new Boss....Lol that's the craziest thing I heard

I couldn't walk up to the management or even the HR to confirm the news, and I know she's a over-ambitious person that's always eyed being my Boss

Well, before the end of that three months, I got a new and better offer and I left them....so she finally has the chance to boss them all in my absence.

Whether wetin she tell me na true or not, me no know till date but at least, we are all happy now

Reasons listed above
1. To deceive their own employees into thinking their workload is going to be reduced by the new workers.
2. Appearance of being open to external talents.
3. To let their employees know that they're replaceable
4. Someone commented to steal ideas from interview candidates. This I have always suspected.
5. Another reason I suspect is that interview notices are a very strong form of unpaid advertisements for the company. You post it one newspaper or social media page with very attractive salaries and every other media outlet, blog post and individual is copying and pasting everywhere for free.

This is very common in Nigeria , especially Lagos , Abuja and Port Hartcourt.

You see your HR manager interviewing for a junior assistant for you because you had complained several times you need an assistant.

Then one week youth see lots of young people dressed up at the gate you ask the security man what are they here for he says oga them say na interview.

You go upstairs ask someone who works in the role and she says they are interviewing an assistant to join your team you excitedly rush to your office and tell the rest of your team the good news.

Two weeks after the interview turns to two months and you don't see any news face join your team .

Human resources vertical in Nigeria is very dishonest.

Forget all the noise they make online and on LinkedIn.

They are a group of over aged single mums and frustrated dishonest people.

Those old postpartum belly having human resource managers are all useless old women.

You see them employing young beautiful girls to work under them just so they can believe they too are still hip and beautiful undecided

Those old cargos should be changed every 4 year max.

They are devoid of ideas after 4 years and the longer they remain they start playing corporate politics in the head office angry

Those old women whom every executive director has slept with , whose husband's are fathering other people's children should be changed every 4 years abeg .

Nonsense women whose dreams died in their youth but choose to remain as HR head for decades yet are as useless as a the P in psychology .

my answer on this particular questions to a certain company was that, if they hire me, I will show them. The HR manager got angry with me. That I am been trickish and wise. They don't need such people. Can you imagine. So their company were looking to employ dûmb people? Now I know it is an interview trick.

When a company puts case studies and series of mental hurdles in their recruitment process that they normally should pay for, if they are soliciting the same service from a professional; run oo

Any organization that starts giving me case study to write as part of recruitment and wont pay for it. I don’t even bother.

Most of them are looking to get their work / ideas for free.

I can remember one Nigerian consulting company firm in particular, if you see the thick case study. It was obvious this was an existing client’s job. I asked how much they would pay for it, they said it is part of the recruitment process, I have to get it down and submit it before I could be interviewed lol. I plainly told them i won’t have time to do it, I still have a job and I am busy. Are you willing to interview me without the case study submission? They said No. I told them “bye”.

Very unprofessional bunch. It’s not their fault, I blame unemployment in Nigeria.
