I wouldn't say the Ukwuani are disgusted at the mere thought of being regarded as Igbo. Rather, I would say they just don't identify with the Igbo ethnic group despite having certain linguistic and cultural similarities with them. Identity is like a covering blanket, if you try to take it away from a people, they will react in the most unpredictable ways because it is akin to stripping them nàked. The vast majority of Ukwuani people do not identify as Igbo so always reject any attempt to classify them as one.

It is because of the post civil war politics, you have to go back to history, after the civil war the non-igbo states that had igbo minority were told in clear terms that they must renounce their igbo identity in order to benefit anything from the Nigerian state.
