Local government as third tier of government is only on paper, in reality it's the official cashcow of governors and their cronies including the elected local government chairmen.

What the hell is caretaker chairmen, as well caretaker governor's should also be appointed by the President in order to reduce cost of operations. Lga's have turned into glorified farmlands where nothing works, no sanitation, no health care, no water supply yets tickets from every angle emanate everyday. Market tickets, okada tickets, LGA building permits, lorry and trailer permits. Is this not another form of banditory? As a Nigerian, your enemy is your fellow brother who has any form of power.

Dish out only what you can take in return. The states are hypocrites. They clamour for devolution of power and fiscal control of their state resources from the FEDERAL but are themselves having problems giving similar autonomy to lower tiers of government under them. That's a trait of crooks

Governors are the chief law breakers in Nigeria. They do alot of illegal things and nothing will happen. They plunder their allocations and LGA allocations. There is never a state courts judgement not fabourable to the state. They pocket all the courts and judges in their state courts. They are the worst politicians in Nigeria

Lagos State for example is Tinubu criminal enterprise, let me use one LGA as an example. Amuwo Odofin , the Local government is located inside festac at 41 Road, this criminal enterprise collect tax from festac residence in hundreds of millions but if you go to FESTAC the roads are like Gaza war zone.

Decades ago, one Tinubu right hand man Ayo was made the chairman by Tinubu and this idiot was literally using cement and sand to fix roads. Once rain fall twice they start all over again.

Back then around 202 road/ FESTAC police station there was a bank there (Oceanic bank) currently Eko bank. In front of their bank there was a drum hole not potholes that was causing traffic and they fixed it overnight because the LG chairman Ayo refuses to give them the go ahead to fix that pothole for free o.

Two days later, Ayo sent his thugs at midnight to destroy the spot again because he was expecting hundreds of millions from state government for that particular pothole.

State governors are very selfish and greedy...they are the ones that do not make the LGA areas villages communities to be developed and put people living in this villages communities LGA areas in poverty hunger hardship

To solve this problem,,

LGA elections should be included in INEC's jurisdiction, to run at the same time with the general elections thereby giving LGA officials a 4 year term.

Just the way INEC conducts National Assembly and State Assembly elections.

Conduct all elections over a 3 week period.

Something like;;;

1st Saturday -- Presidential and National Assembly.
2nd Saturday -- Governorship and State Assembly.
3rd Saturday -- Local Government Elections.

Our state governors are mostly the reason Nigeria has remained backward. They carry out their duties unchecked and unhindered. Receive state allocation + LGA funds and IGR yet absolutely nothing to show for it. Just borrow extra billions and build few KMs of roads with open drainages and call it a tenure. No landmark achievements, no out of the box initiatives for job creation and revenue generation, no extraordinary urban renewal projects, poor and insignificant investments in education and healthcare, no social housing projects, just the normal garbage in garbage out cycle at every election. It is sad really. Every leader must be held accountable and must be checked. The immunity clause must as a matter of urgency be stopped. Running our society without a functional local government system is ineffective. The local government is the closest arm of government to the people and must be effective.

The Genesis of Nigeria problem , Nigeria was safe & secure when LGA were run effectively because the LGs are the closest to the people. Gone are those days when farmers can get fertilizers, tractors, seedlings and other farm inputs from their LG. And the use of local vigilante were efficient. But things went south immediately selfish governors emperors took over and reduce local government to just a mere office in their cabinet.
I keep saying it the FG fault in all these mess is just a few and Nigerians are yet to realize that the Governors are cancer ♋ to the 5th Republic, the only way out is regionalism and that's when we all see the rot that the gov has caused

The genesis of this mess is the creation of LCDAs from the LGAs, as there were no allocation for the newly created LCDAs and the government want to meet their needs, hence, seized their allocation and share among the LGAs and LCDAs. That is just the genesis and it started in 2004. Let us call a space a space and not a spoon. The fragmentation of LGAs without allocation to the fragmented ones caused all this and it began from Lagos and Enugu and I think another state in the north. I can't just recall now. As laudable as that gesture was, it really paralyzed the third tier of government. Lagos was able to survive because they are making a lot of money from tax because of many effects in Lagos.
