Considering the options available at the time, I don't think they made a mistake.

On the one hand there's PO that can hardly be called a successful governor, his rebellious streak in addition with his wasteful spending, plus lack of foresight leave nothing to be desired.

Then we have Atiku with proven track record of corruption, selling government properties to cronies, starching money offshore in addition to ridiculous properties in Dubai and God knows where, hardly anything good to mention.

And finally some baby politicians with affinity for weed, lack of basic understanding of how government work.

In other words, there were no good options.

Nigerians of all tribes, ethnicity and religion now wants a regime that will put food on their table and make life more meaningful, not the one that takes away food from their table and improverished their lives.
