topoftheworld:
Will state assembly sign the bills?

Will state Governors accept this fate?

I'm just curious!
It failed under PMB,
If I were tinubu, I will call the governors and give them directives. If you refuse, Omo na EFCC and police go deal with you. Those roques misappropriate funds anyhow.
The time is now

Shey all 36 governora signed the state police bill when only 20 initial agreed.
Their mind go touch ground

Nigerians, know how the process of constitutional amendment works!

2/3 of the states houses of assembly needs to approve. This is the difficult part. If they don't approve, nothing Tinubu can do
crestedaguiyi:
if true, then we are in for a good ride in the coming years. we used to have vibrant local government system t.

But how will states that has rolled out fund for local govt election get back the funds.

Tinubu abeg sign this one sharp sharp and kindly remember to add the anti grazing bill, i know that is one of the reason the fulani's are ganging up against you, the ignorant ones are calling it the north gang up without looking closely

it’ll certainly bring power to the locals because technically more people looting means more locals are now in charge right? Does that not imply power/resources are closer to the people?
Re: National Assembly Grants Full Autonomy To The 774 Local Governments Of Nigeria . by DMerciful(m): 11:18pm On Jul 03, 2024
Nope! The reason more development happens under the military is because there are few people looting. The more the 'middle men', the more the loses in any system

Fortunately military is forever is our past but in a democracy a functional Lga adds more value because it’s a government of the majority.

A functional democracy? Yes!

What we have is not a democracy but civilian rule where politicians loot recklessly and with impunity!

What works in corrupt free govt don't work here

■ It's not about the President signing it into law. There must be 2/3 majority from each of 36 States of the Federation HoAss, agreeing to the amendment. This amendments have always been from the days of Obasanjo to Buhari. But when the amendments gets to the State Houses of Assembly, the governor would instruct the rubber-stamp House of Assembly to throw it out. It will never see the light of Day. I remembered in the last administration, they were 18 states that agreed to the amendments.
In my State, Rivers State, Wike instructed the house that the Bill should be thrown out. I could remember Wanosike, the Ikwerre LGA Chairman saying publicly that they don't want any autonomy. So it's a complex situation.

The concept of democracy itself posits work in progress; otherwise, the minorities won't have their say. By the way, can you mention one corrupt-free democracy in the world? Just one. Even the Nordic countries have some level of corruption.

When corruption is near zero, you can approximate. Nobody is talking about heaven, stop looking for companion in corruption.

Work in progress? Yes.
Retrogressing? Not supposed to be but thats what Nigeria is doing.

Near zero corrupt countries are the Scandinavian countries for example

I hope you know Scandinavian is a subset of the Nordic countries and they practice parliamentary democracy. I'd expected you to mention a corrupt-free presidential democracy.

And yes, I'll support the corruption that devolves more power to the people and allow them to take responsibility for their own needs. Why should anyone be waiting for the FG to fix a trunk C road? If you, the local people, decide to loot the fund for the trunk-C road construction, that's on them. And more importantly, the attendant competition amongst the LGA's should deliver more value to the people.
Re: National Assembly Grants Full Autonomy To The 774 Local Governments Of Nigeria . by DMerciful(m): 8:44am On Jul 04, 2024
We do not really need to practice the presidential system of government, inherently wasteful.

I do not like sharing from the center rather there should be state autonomy including having their own constitution, police, electoral commission and 100% resource control. 15% to run the federal govt and 15% to the Federation account thats shared to all states to support poor states.

I do not support local govt autonomy because it defies federalism.

Now we are making some progress with this back and forth. You're not entirely correct to say LGA defies federalism because ideally the LGA are subsets of States in a presidential system, states should create LGA’s not FG but we sort of added military unitary mentality that over-centralizes power to our form of presidential democracy.

The states have thus far shown to be too corruption-prone because there are almost no checks & balance system to scrutinize their activities. Empowering another layer in the form of LGA will reduce their power & looting tendency. We've to be pragmatic in finding solutions and not act/think like activists who are often utopia-hunting.

To further buttress; which do you think is easier to achieve before 2027 electioneering starts; LGA autonomy or decentralization of power to states?
Re: National Assembly Grants Full Autonomy To The 774 Local Governments Of Nigeria . by DMerciful(m): 9:18am On Jul 04, 2024
We need to ditch the presidential system of government and return to parliamentary system.

In a federal system, the states come together to form a country and therefore the states are the federating units. Technically, in the case of Nigeria, the federating units are the indigenous nationalities, if the formation of Nigeria was properly done.

Local government autonomy meants there are three federating bodies which defies logic of true federalism.

I'd prefer state autonomy before 2027! I do not want regional govts because it will be too complicated to achieve just now but the current states structure should be given full autonomy.

It does take a lot of time to achieve if we agree

The FG has killed the bill already by saying INEC will conduct the election,INEC that is under the control of FG that will not be acceptable to the governor and state Assembly. The bill will not sail through

No, you are not correct. In a federalist system, power is shared amongst two federating units, not three; the local authorities are subsets of the states or provinces. Do some research.

I doubt if we can achieve that in another decade, but the complexity of defining what state autonomy entails will make it very unlikely just as regionalism. However, LGA autonomy is much more realistic before the elections, and if achieved, more people will benefit either directly/indirectly or legally/illegally.

I said the states are the federating units. The local governments should not be recognized at the national level.

If we cannot agree on state autonomy before 2027 then we're not ready.

That idea of accepting whats easy made us accept the 1999 constitution thats an illegitimate constitution. We need to do the right restructuring once and for all

Federating units implies units within a federation, which includes the province/state & central/federal. What makes the 1999 constitution illegitimate? There are no perfect constitutions; it's all a work in progress, which is why there is a provision for amendment. You are not accepting what is easy but what is possible and plausible; it will be a lot easier to convince the people about state autonomy after the success of LGA autonomy than before.
