The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has threatened to penalise deposit money banks (DMBs) that reject mutilated naira notes.

In a statement on Thursday signed by Solaja Olayemi, CBN’s acting director of currency operations department, the apex bank said several reports have been made against the banks.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has received several reports of rejection of dirty/mutilated Naira banknotes by some Deposit Money Banks (DMBs),” the bank said.

“Consequently, it has become imperative to remind DMBs that the CBN circular dated July 2, 2019, reference number COD/DIR/GEN/CIR/01/006, which prescribes penalties for the rejection of Naira banknotes, is still enforceable and binding on erring DMBs.”

The apex bank said it will not hesitate to impose strict sanctions on banks reported to have rejected naira deposits from the public, under any guise.

Also, on July 2, CBN warned banks and authorised foreign exchange dealers against rejecting old series and lower denominations of dollars.

The apex bank said all relevant parties must adhere to and comply with the instruction, emphasising its disapproval of selective acceptance of deposits.

CBN said it discovered old series and lower denominations of dollars are still being rejected during a consumer market survey.

Its a silly thing to be honest, if the banks should reject it, then who sre we suppposed to take it to? They are not being reaslistic, a random stats tho but I'm sure that Mutilated nots is almost like 35% of all the total notes in circulation

Imagine not having where to take all that to, no be another yawa be that?? Then we will be looking at another 'bank-induced' Naira scarcity

Na wa o
These banks are really becoming useless
I remember back then, we use to go to the banks to change mutilated naira notes & now banks are rejecting it? No wonder there are so many mutilated 100 naira notes all over the place. When u go to pos to withdraw, to get decent note is now a problem. Always tattered naira notes.

Accepting mutilated notes has cost implications that's why some banks reject them undecided

Maybe mutilated currency ain't profitable now tongue

A box formally was one thousand naira profit in 2009~$6(1k) then shocked

CBN won't give $6 (9k) now .
The rate might still be same now

Well, personally I don't even accept mutilated notes whether from conductors or sellers in the markets.

Been my personal policy for years, and it has served me well!

The way many Nigerians treat the nation's currency is shocking and shameful.

CBN and NOA alongside security agencies need to do more about the poor handling and abuse of the Naira notes.

We need to quit acting like animals in the wild! It's reprehensible and inexcusable.

Most NIGERIANS are such lawless and brutish things!

If I may ask: what has been the current CBN governor's achievement in the sacking of directors in the institution? Has it strengthened the naira against the dollar? Has it improved our economy?

Yemi Cardoso was busy sacking CBN directors while Heritage bank was getting into liquidation, naira was getting weaker, and the economy was going into comatose.
Technocrat my foot!

What comes to mind is one dark female GTBank staff in Makurdi (Otukpo Road branch) on a low cut with chubby cheeks garnished with assorted variety of acne sizes.
grin

She is currently in the customer service section of that branch.

If you know you know. grin

This is commendable....
This wasn't the case in the olden days, naira is a FG property and if they are mutilated or so we are supposed to return it to banks.
But unfortunately, banks are rejecting it.

It usually cost me extra money to deposit mutilated notes

Accept it from the banks too and phase them out

You’re the last bus stop and part of the problem

Banks are charged for swapping old notes which shouldn’t be
