It was a Labour win in one seat in Essex to mirror the celebration for the party nationally. In a loss for the Conservatives Labour gained the Southend East and Rochford seat.

Bayo Alaba with 15,395 votes was elected beating Conservative candidate Gavin Haran who had 11,368 votes. In third was Reform UK's Leslie Lilley with 7,214 votes. Green's Simon Cross had 2,716 votes followed by James Allen with the Lib Dems with 2,269 votes.

Lee Clark of Confelicity got 488 votes and Bianca Isherwood of the Heritage Party got 206 votes. The area was always going to have a new MP with longstanding MP Sir James Duddridge standing down for this election.

Outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak said: “The Labour Party has won this General Election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.” Mr Sunak added: “Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides.

“And it’s something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry.”
