I have been trying to figure how to answer this interview question from BlackRock but I guess I am not a sociopath or pyschopathic enough to get employed in BlackRock.

Making an example of the first to try escaping doesn't work on criminals .

If it does , they won't be your convicted prisoner in the first place .

Convicts are desperate men .

Shooting the first won't do jack shit because after a while another individual or group of individuals will attempt escaping.

The power to hold them prisoner does not lie on a lone gunman with one bullet.

1) A gun with a single bullet. You know that BUT YOUR PRISONERS DO NOT. That's one of your advantage: Imbalance of information


2) "if any one of the prisoners have a non-zero probability of escaping, he will attempt to escape"
Meaning if any one of the prisoners perceive even the slightest 0.1 chance of survival on attempt of escaping, he will try to escape

Once again, the prisoners don't know that. All this is information you know...not the prisoners

This is more a question in leadership and not statistical probabilities.

The question provides an analogue into unpopular leadership over a hostile population.

You have limited power in the form of being a custodian of the prisoners with one gun and a single bullet. Not that it matters if you have an infinite number of bullets because one man with a gun is no match to ten men talk more of a hundred.

Violence is the last thing you will engage in controlling the prisoners which the question provides as "desperate murderers".

You shoot one and the rest will sooner or later take their chance at escaping.

One man with a gun with unlimited ammo can not keep a hundred desperate men hostage.

The answer thus lies outside using violence to enforce compliance.

The answer to this question lies in control via dialogue and not violence.

I don't know the answer but I sure know that shooting one prisoner will surely eventually lead to the guard getting killed and the prisoners all escaping.

So BlackRock is asking you here to provide a way to be a tyrant with the sole powers of authority over a very hostile and desperate population.

Promise them a huge reward or pardon if they stay calm and don't try to escape
