A Call for Empathy and Leadership: Learning from International Examples

Yesterday, a devastating tragedy struck Jos, Nigeria, as a school collapsed during exams, claiming the lives of 20 innocent children. While the nation mourns, the absence of President Tinubu at the scene is glaring. In times of crisis, leaders are expected to provide comfort, support, and reassurance. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

In contrast, let us look at examples from other countries where leaders demonstrated empathy and leadership in the face of tragedy:

- In 2014, when a school shooting occurred in Peshawar, Pakistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif immediately visited the site, met with families, and condemned the attack.

- After the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the site and ensured prompt rescue efforts and support for victims' families.

- When a earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, President Ram Baran Yadav rushed to the affected areas, assessing damage and providing hope to the people.

These examples demonstrate that leaders can make a difference by being present in times of need. Their presence humanizes the tragedy, acknowledges the suffering, and inspires hope.

We urge President Tinubu to take a cue from these examples and visit the affected families in Jos. Show the nation that you care, that you value the lives lost, and that you are committed to ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.
