franchasofficia:Who is responsible for checking the quality of cement used in the construction? Was it Dangote cement used? The best cement in the world can be used... does that mean the concrete will be up to standard or above standard? There is a reason why there are building inspectors... to ensure standards are met and maintained. They are the gatekeepers but we never hold them responsible. These row buildings ... one collapse ... what should that tell you about the others? Have the authorities evacuated them? .. will they inspect them for structural integrity? ... and if they are not will they have them demolished? Will they investigate and find out who signed off on them? ... and interrogate that person? These are the things we don't do... find the root cause and take preventative actions. And we wonder why buildings keep collapsing even before they are completed. Authorized death traps everywhere . |

It is now becoming a normal trend in Nigeria, the tears of yesterday building collapse is still in our eyes and another has occurred today. Government officials will come on air and threaten to do investigation to ascertain the cause and bring defaulters to book and at the end of the day nothing will be done about it. No sane government will allow things like this go on almost every week without taking proper actions |

franchasofficia:..it is not substandard cement causing it...a builder will use 2 bags of cement with a lot of sand to mould 200 blocks to build house or storey building because cement is very expensive nowadays.. what do you expect ?..the building must collapse.. where the builder is supposed to use 60 bags of cement to mould the 200 blocks for the storey building and house to be very strong and last longer |

franchasofficia:Nah... Leave Dangote out of this. Even poor cement can still hold a building firmly if well mixed and with the right building materials. Nigerian contractors and engineers pocket more than half of building budgets and allocations, then use substandard and fewer materials. That's why people I know contract personal building projects to non-Nigerians from neighboring countries. |

While emergency responders and security personnel were on ground, rescue efforts were hampered as the cranes needed for the rescue were yet to arrive as of 8:45 am, nearly two hours after the incident.is this not amazing? |

| Re: Two-Storey Building Collapses In Kubwa, Abuja (Photos) by dallyemmy: 12:57pm On Jul 13, 2024 |
I think that may not necessarily be the cause. In fact, there are several reasons why buildings collapse. It could be as a result of the standard of the materials used such as iron rod strength, cement as you mentioned, sand, granite and more importantly the concrete mixture ratio. Also, the nature of the soil where the structure was built, the load the building was subjected to and even erosion or exposure to water could be responsible. franchasofficia: |
| Re: Two-Storey Building Collapses In Kubwa, Abuja (Photos) by Kaybeth(f): 1:00pm On Jul 13, 2024 |
Should we attribute these occurrences to the hike in cement and high cost of building materials? This brings us back to the high cost of survival which our leaders have deliberately ignored but you see them make cheap comments on sm and vain press release and donations invariably mocking the victims. Sad |

If the Nigeria state is too cautious of Nigeria's mouthy Civil Society's exploitation of the people for unspecified political aims, then perhaps the Nigeria state should adopt what UK did, which is institute Health & Safety as a legislative article and weaponise it. With Health& Safety instituted, Nigeria authorities can go after some of Nigeria's infrastructural scourges such as building industry. For instance, by exploiting Health & Safety, authorities will be able to neutralise Civil Society group's citing concerns for the welfare of the poor as means of obstructing authorities targeting illegal structures. Due to health and safety, government can impose some discipline on Nigeria people's anyhowness. Suddenly most things are game: poorly constructed walkways ( pose health and safety concerns); clearing bush and exposing the land (poses health and safety concerns); open gutters (pose health and safety concerns); slums (pose health and safety concerns); schools without border walls (pose health and safety concerns); unregulated or and irregularly uninspected amusement parks (pose health and safety risks); poorly maintained zoos and animals (pose health and safety concerns) etc, etc. University of Abuja and that Abuja Gateway structure are deplorable looking. They pose health and safety risk (eyesores) and must be pulled down and rebuilt to world standards ![]() |

Olichoke:Blocks are not a major structural part of a building. If it's just the blocks, a house won't collapse. Major structures are foundations, lintels, beams, and columns. Then the roof. Only time blocks can cause collapse is in bungalows with no columns. |
