SmartPolician:
Buildings have already started collapsing in Abuja of yesterday. When did the FCT become a federal capital that houses built yesterday are already collapsing?

The government needs to enforce building standards and regulations to end this once and for all. Apart from corruption, what have we gotten right in this country?
IBB moved the Federal Capital to Abuja officially in 1992, 32 years ago, so it's not quite "yesterday".

The point, rather, is just sub-par construction practices.

Some buildings even collapse before they're finished, if they're constructed poorly.

Dangote needs to be invited by the House of Reps.

This is no longer about builders but cement manufacturers in Nigeria need to be grilled and cautioned.

They produce substandard cement and still sell it at exorbitant price to struggling Nigerians yet government and SON does nothing to checkmate them
no commot better money buy quality material build your house, very soon you go blame it on substandard water no be only cement

Government needs to live up to the billing to forestall this. People are ready to do anything when they know they won't be properly monitored or investigated or punished for cutting corners.
May GOD saves the victims and see them alk out of this alive.

Many things we call buildings in Nigeria are death traps.

When you are 'smart', you smart for it.

So who is to be blamed?
99thEnemy:
Wetin concern dangote for this one?

Is it not the same dangote, lafarge and bua cement that is used for capital projects by all major construction companies throughout Nigeria?

how many of them have collapsed or how many of these companies have complained of the cement not reaching recommended standard?
Re: Two-Storey Building Collapses In Kubwa, Abuja (Photos) by Love800(m): 4:57pm On Jul 14, 2024
I dont understand the bolded?
vince96w2:
sometimes it's the people that try to get more blocks instead of the required amounts per bag of cement. Also, they build stories on top of foundation of bungalow..Nigerian builders and landlords are not sincere especially if they won't live there..All they think of is profits rather than life.
Re: Two-Storey Building Collapses In Kubwa, Abuja (Photos) by Love800(m): 5:06pm On Jul 14, 2024
Is it not blocks they use to do the bolded?
What are you saying?
CorrectionFLuid:
Blocks are not a major structural part of a building. If it's just the blocks, a house won't collapse. Major structures are foundations, lintels, beams, and columns. Then the roof.

Only time blocks can cause collapse is in bungalows with no columns.

Concrete, and iron rods. Not blocks.

Love800:
So who is to be blamed?
Common sense cannot tell you that they didn’t use qualified people to do the job?

In the name of cutting costs. They don’t use the required standards.

For example, General purpose concrete in the ratio of Cement : Sand : Gravel is supposed to be 1 : 2 : 4

for higher strength when constructing even 1 : 1.5 : 3 can be used.

how many constructions done by individual contractors in Nigeria follow these standards?

even the rods used for reinforcements are most times far below the recommended sizes for high rise buildings.

The worse buildings are those in estates. the construction is done shabbily for construction to be at a barest minimum and the sell at exorbitant rates to make maximum profit.

So you who did you think was to blame before?
Re: Two-Storey Building Collapses In Kubwa, Abuja (Photos) by Love800(m): 10:39am On Jul 15, 2024
Okay.
So when will blocks be blamed for collapsing. In which situation?
CorrectionFLuid:
Concrete, and iron rods. Not blocks.

Awesome.
I use to think this too, but couldn't come to conclusion.
Thanks so much.
