Please can someone tell me the minimum power/wattage of solar panels that I can connect to a 100 amp pwm solar controller? I fear I have bought one that is too much for my needs. I want to power 3 devices 24/7 with my setup. I have the charge controller plus 1. Raspberry pi 5 pc drawing 5v 4a 2. Raspberry pi zero 2 drawing 5v 2a 3. Ethernet switch drawing 5v 1a I am not connecting anything else to the controller as load apart from the above 3 units. I have one 12v 90AH lead acid battery and one 3.2v 72AH CALB LifePo4 battery. I think I can't use the LifePo4 because I made the mistake of getting the pwm charge controller right? I just want to use one out of the two batteries for my setup for now and leave room to upgrade later but my next purchase will be a solar panel to power the setup although I need help to know the right size/power of panel(s) to buy that will power all three of my machines during the day comfortably and also recharge the battery for use during the night when the sun goes down. My plan is to connect the panel to the 100 amp controller, connect one of the batteries to the controller to recharge and use a step down/up buck converter to give me an output of 5v 10a max. Is tbis possible? |

Conner44:The 12v 90ah battery will work, you can use a 150w panel to charge it up, you will need a buck converter to step down the 12v to 5v so you can use it with your appliances |
| Re: Diy Lithium Ion Like-minds by Conner44: 10:09pm On Jul 12, 2024 |
Penuelseun:Okay so what you're saying is that my wiring should look like below: 150w panel -> 100a charge controller -> 12v 90AH battery -> 5v 10a DC to DC buck converter (connected directly to the battery) -> the 3 computers I have as loads? CAN THIS SETUP PROVIDE 5V 10A DURING THE DAY WITH GOOD SUN TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LOAD ON THE BATTERY WHILE ITBIS BEING RECHARGED BY THE SOLAR CONTROLLER? I am also contemplating buying two of the below items to use in the wiring setup : Pic 1. 12v automatic low power shut off to stop the battery from discharging past 50% of its capacity (45AH) for longevity of the battery. Pic 2. 12v to 5v 10a dc converter OR Pic 3. 5v 5a & 5v 3a Ubec step down converters (I will use the 5a for the bigger machine and the 3a for the remaining 2 machines)

Conner44:go for 1 & 2, buy a higher current rated buck converter maybe 20a to accommodate all your devices |

akseph1:most of these laptop extracted cells have very low amperage I'll advice u to do a capacity test on them before usage. |

Cell balancing is a very important part of building any powerpack. This will balance the voltage of all the lines.

Please, house my li-ion knowledge is quite limited and I have decided to ditch my UPS and build my own battery bank from scratch. I have gotten a grasp of the set up but I got confused with the buck converter stuff. Do I need a buck converter if I already have an inverter i.e will a 12v inverter do the work of a buck converter? Is the buck converter same as step down module? Will the BMS protect the batteries from over discharge and over charge as well? Lastly, where can one source for some items like 12v inverter, battery and volt/current indicator locally?

| Re: Diy Lithium Ion Like-minds by Penuelseun(m): 11:25pm On Jul 16, 2024 |
NACE13:You don't need a buck converter if your charge controller is capable of charging the battery without issues. Yes, your bms is there to protect your cells against overcharge and over discharge but count your bms as a last resort, you should never allow your setup to get to those stages frequently or you risk damaging your cells |

Your accessories can be sourced from alaba if you are in Lagos or order them from Konga |

Penuelseun:good morning boss. If a regular car battery charger can fully charge a lithium ion battery with bms installed without any issues. Then a normal inverter of 24v should be able to charge a 24v 7s battery without issues also? Cc dollarnaira ewizard1 |

Product has a demo video in its description and is enabled for Same Day delivery within Lagos https://www. konga.com/product/easun-pure-sine-wave-inverter-12v-1600w-surge-800w-continuous-with-free-cable-lug-6411492 |

odimbannamdi:thank you for drawing my attention to it, Car battery charger I meant. |
| Re: Diy Lithium Ion Like-minds by olaztek(m): 8:51am On Jul 17, 2024 |
officialfestus:Lithium ion batteries are very sensitive and requires cc/cv source to charge them safely. A car battery charger does not have the cc/cv function and therefore risky to charge lithium ion batteries. Many manufacturers are now integrating Lithium charging profile into their charge controllers and inverters to accomodate Lithium battery. Be careful with Lithium ion battery as any wrong charger or Inverter not designed for it can cause thermal runaway in the battery pack thereby leading to fire and loss of property. Do not solely rely on your bms for maximum protection as it can fail like every other electronics. And note Lithium fire is difficult to extinguish because it has its own special type of fire extinguisher. |

Penuelseun:Thank you. I'm not going solar yet, if that's the charge controller you are talking about. I just want to use normal electricity i.e PHCN or generator to charge it for now. Before we get to the BMS as the last resort, what should be put in place before then for proper protection of the cells? |
