1. See how easily that rolls off your mind there. Do you know that in over 400 years of the existence of the United States, there have been only 27 constitutional amendments? But do you know how many times, in the last 25 years alone, Nigerians have tampered with their Constitution? Do you know who has benefitted the most each time the Constitution has been tampered with under the guise of amendments and do you know those who have suffered the most? I can tell you that the politicians have benefitted the most each time, and the spread of corruption ...has not been brought to check with any of many amendments.

The Governors violated the Law of the Land. They illegally obstructed the functioning of LGs and embezzled public funds; In saner climes, all such governors would be removed from office, and prosecuted. But in Nigeria, no one seems to be calling for a common sense solution to all of that corruption and illegality.

If that will improve the country from local government’s perspective, so be it. The local governments have been helpless and useless under the governors. Hitherto, local governments used to engage in local road constructions and similar activities, but now they are as useless as ‘ay’ in okay.

There is no law prohibiting their impeachment and prosecution for these crimes.

2. Yes, they can be removed from office. The only officials protected by an immunity clause in Nigeria are the President, the Vice president, the Governors, and the Deputy Governor. Even at that, in the case, there is evidence of crimes committed during the office, they can all be impeached and then prosecuted for said crimes. The fact that Judiciaries are controlled by them should not matter since the Senate is the office responsible for handling impeachments and they, senators and reps, can be recalled by the electorate.

3. It is no factory reset! LG autonomy is what currently exists and has been bastardized by the greed of the Governors. The recent ruling instead is a shift of illegal power from the Governors to the FG. Yes, it is illegal what the Governors have been doing. Prescribing to have FG directly control LGs is also illegal since it contravenes what is currently contained in the Constitution. What needs to change is not the Constitution but the handling of issues of illegality and embezzlement.

Advance influencing of the system. The governors whose states have not conducted lg election will quickly do their stock in trade in order to be eligible for funds fed account. One thing is for sure, that’s It will expose a lot.
