This is very wrong and I don't know why people don't see it. This will lead to a complete state capture by the ruling party.

In true democracies like america, federal agencies are not responsible for conducting state elections. We have seen how the ruling party removes and makes governors at will.

If inec, a federal agency, is allowed to decide the electoral process of states in Nigeria, then the state agency for elections should be totally responsible for the conduct of local government elections in their domains.

In my opinion inec should only conduct federal elections while state elections agency should be responsible for state elections while local government elections agency should be responsible for local government elections.

This is the opposite of true federalism and we are just concentrating everything in Abuja which is very wrong. States needs their independence. We can't continue in this unitary system of government that is stifling development and promoting tribalism and political rascality.
You should understand that fedralism is a conundrum.
There are many things that can be copied from the US. States conducting LG elections should be the least because the SIECs have all failed.

Federalism is dynamic and if something is not working then it needs to be tweaked to fit the unique circumstances.

The people are are calling for a change, they have seen that the worst of INEC or a new body will be better than the best of SIECs.

TBH if the LGs are functional, that will allow for rapid development of the country. The state governors have failed so the people are calling for a change in the electoral process.

If you live in the country you will understand that LG results are written in government houses of the various states. In resources and administration the FG is better than the states, the people are uninformed otherwise everyone should be blaming their various states.

Removing the power of selecting LGA chairmen by the Governor through SIEC, only to give it back to them through the local government levels. What a joke the national assembly is.

Why not create a department in inec to handle Local Government elections

Why create a fresh agency that will increase cost of governance

The major problem with this tinubu administration is they never think tru the policy before implementing it, they don’t consider the big picture or the aftermath

Same thing happened with subsidy removal and naira floating
I don't know what is there plan but currently Inec does not have the legal backing so the proper thing to do make the necessary laws. Though those guys are crazy they might just decide to Create something new which will be foolish if they do.

So INEC can not be mobilized to be organizing LG elections, maybe in batches. They must find a way to be wasting more funds
Not without legal backing, it currently does not have the power to do so.

Purely own goal.

Reelection would be so easy. That must be a proxy request from the state governors.

Can the LG oversight themselves?
can the states oversee themselves
Can the fed oversee itself

I think we should keep tinkering with democracy until we get the best one for us. I am a deltan the last election they said they did last week Saturday was only in the news, nobody voted as there was no election but pdp cleared everywhere same thing with all previous election. If you go to APC states you will see the same thing. These guys practically capture everything and if they were working it would have been good, nothing works at the local government level, so far the presidency has done right by me.
Re: Senate Moves To Establish Local Government Independent Electoral Commission by fabolouz1(m): 8:41pm On Jul 18, 2024
There isn't really any need to create a bill for this.
A simple solution would have been to amend the law creating INEC and accommodate the electoral body powers to conduct local government elections .

very correct. I agree with you a 100%
Re: Senate Moves To Establish Local Government Independent Electoral Commission by RhinoChest: 9:00pm On Jul 18, 2024
Nigerians should celebrate this, as real development should come from grassroots.

Our LGs should be independent and autonomous.

Some local government have different problems from others, so each solving its problems is the right way to go.

Alismosho might want to work on its drainage, Ikoyi local gov might want to install CCTV around its environs, and both will have the funds and autonomy as they see fit.

A local gov in rural Kano might want to build a processing plant for its farmers, which might be different from what a local gov in central Kano wants. Waiting for state gov to solve these issues might mean waiting forever!

Also, good-hearted governors should embrace it as it means less headache for them. They won’t be called every minutes to be solving trivial issues, so will have more time to solve bigger statewide issues.

INEC can be empowered to hold LG elections
Siec can be rejigged to free them from governors control

The FG can now interfere in LG elections directly by bypassing the governors. Who knows what the proposed law would say about the appointment of the electoral officers? It might not be left for the governors to appoint.

And if the FG is to appoint a chairman to conduct LG elections for each state, then consider the matter accomplished because they will water down the strength of the governors.

The thing is somewhat fishy to me. That's all I am saying. It's just unclear.

This is Nigeria where every scheme is an attempt to future remove from the people of Nigeria the power to change their situation. This is a move by the FG to take full control over the workings of things even at the grassroots level, shifting this from a Federation to a semi-dictatorial setup, fronted still as a democracy of course. undecided

Nigeria is a place where rather than attack corruption head-on, the criminals in power would instead tamper with the very Supreme Law of the land to further deprive the people of their ability to control their fate. undecided

Of course you do because it is almost impossible for a lot of you to imagine the people in fact controlling their own destiny and lives in what is after all supposed to be their own democracy. undecided

All the many laws wey dem don amend to this day, how many of them have solved corruption in any sector of government? All they have instead done is further entrench corruption in parts of government that were formerly not impacted. undecided

Stop lying to yourselves abeg! These people tampering with your laws have none of your interest in mind. undecided

From my understanding of the bill , It is going to be a National commision like the INEC but strictly for the LG elections .

every gray areas will be addressed. Keep believing.

Tinubu is bent on rescuing the LGs and we love him for that.

Can't you see this is coming early and would do a lot to get the LGs easing pains at the grassroots before 2027? If the governors want to play God, Tinubu would work with the LGs and push through. It's a chokehold on the governors.
