Pls house I planted my egusi in may. It was doing perfectly well till I weeded it last three weeks and everything died off. Pls what could be the cause and can I replant again this July? |

chiommy123:You probably accidentally uprooted them while weeding. I think Egusi is a climber, have you considered raising it above the ground? 🤔 |

chiommy123:Melon family can't cope with excess water. If the soil doesn't soak up the rains before the next falls, the root of the crops becomes asphyxiated lacking the air support the roots needs to stay alive. If you must plant the next one, do it on heaps so that excess water can drain off. Then the rains is too much this period for those kind of crops |

Apart that, you don’t plant melon during rainy season, unless you want to use green house. It will rot. Either the leaf or fruit rot, it’s not necessary you use heap once you make sure you have well drained soil and you don’t plant them during time that rain falls almost everyday. This rain falls that happens almost everyday does happen around September every year but this year seems like changes, so that might be due to a bad weather forecast. Melon does well if planted at very first rain in every region in Nigeria or at late rain in all region and not at peak rain. Southwest here, March to April and October to November is the best time to do it. |

chiommy123:The next planting season is march to may,we did egusi in a large scale ones in oyo state. The following year( this year), we didn't want to plant it again. We were successful but the labour for harvesting and processing was a bit much since they don't know much about it. It was so time consuming. |

| Re: Remedy For My Farm by chiommy123(op): 7:01pm On Jul 22, 2024 |
Nigerfine3:thanks. So I may be right about what killed the last one was the weeding |
| Re: Remedy For My Farm by JuanDeDios: 11:44am On Dec 01, 2024 |
chiommy123:Definitely right. Weeding kills crawling plants, especially during frequent rains. This applies to melons, water yams, cucumbers, etc. Once they start crawling, just leave them alone. Best to plant in the beginning of the year, weeks before planting maize, because falling maize tassels also affect them. |
