See how some companies will start retrenching. Some will even break the companies to like 2 or 3 subsidiaries so they can be fewer than 25 staffs. May God help us in this COWntry 🐄
That is my biggest fear. Or some may make the job causal or part-time basis which the law also exempts.

I think the law still needs some amendments

My own is that everyone should be honest with themselves. There are Individual companies who pay way disproportional wages to staff in relations to earning. This one everyone de take on government is way too fake. Many of us will cry how we are not making anything in business but de build huz for village and buy expensive cars while worker go de on 45k salary for 8yrs.

Some people in this country don't know exactly what they want. Here is your senate speaker protecting the masses but some news agency is breaking one rubbish law to the surface. When you guys are crying that the 70k approved minimum wage is nothing. What will 70k buy in the market now and whey are they stressing the need for maid or gateman not to be paid 70k. Useless set of people.

I suggest law making and amendment should be given to the judiciary! While the national Assembly scrapped. Better still, the National Assembly should be able to counter and nullify wrong interpretation by judiciary.
What is the essence of making laws you can't interpret or understand? One judge will just turn (interpret) the law the way s/he deems fit. Judiciary is the real law makers in Nigeria, because, the senators do not understand their own intentions, and that has given the judiciary upper hand.

House of Reps is already amending that law to allow only companies with about 25 employees and above to comply with that minimum wage regulation.

Well, I don't think it's a good move though because there are companies that don't need up to 25 employees to make millions of naira every month.

Meanwhile, Nigeria doesn't need two houses - House of Reps and Senate. They are just creating confusion.
Na copy copy carry us get the 2 houses ohh. Be like copier wey go copy surname plus reg. # join.

Ofcourse no staff or worker will be paid lesser than 70k and even the 70k is chicken change.. yesterday a friend of mine did a Little get together and he spent 150k on Canadian loud just to entertain about 11 guys and 4 girls moving on from that

Some blocked heads are saying every Igbos should leave Lagos and other parts of Nigeria and go to the east to protest against the bad government., My question to these blocked head zombies is don't the Igbos pay their taxes in Lagos and other regions where they reside ? I'm not even Igbo but the truth is if igbo leave Lagos,Lagos will crumble in less than 3 years.. real facts ..
Do you live and breathe tribal war incitement. What's the correlation between minimum wage and igbo leaving Lagos now..

Your statement is false because there is nothing to amend. The previous law already exempts employers with under 25 employees. The new 2024 law is merely an amendment to the 2019 law and it only amends 2 sections 1) the amount from 30k to 70k and the review period from 5yrs to 3 yrs.

It doesn’t take much to google the actual laws.

Help me tell them o! I tire for Nigerians with their addiction to negativity and insults.

What Akpabio said may not necessarily be a true reflection of the law and can't apply to every employer for obvious reasons, but it's actually for the best interest of the masses especially the low income earners. Therefore, it's actually not bad after all.

If that Akpabio's statement is able to compel an employer to upgrade the salary of his lowest earning staff to 70k, won't the affected staff be happy for it?

There is a reason good things will keep evading some people.

What this law could have meant, is that anyone who works for any governmental 'parastatal' must not earn less than #70,000thousand/(31)/(30). Given that he has been given an appointment letter. This cannot however apply to an entrepreneurship except of course he will have to fill the tax forms and cac monthly. You could have clearly seen so many offices and now businesses have folded up except of course only government agencies and politicians entrepreneurship.

If you want to cover the informal sector with few employees then the minimum wage stipulation has to be hourly not monthly.

That way you account for employers not in need of full staff on full day wages. I only need a cleaner for 2 hours a day.

Note:

The leader of labour said in interview that they were forced to accept 70k as minimum wage, that the FG threatened to increase the cost of energy if they don't accept 70k as minimum wage.

This means that nothing has changed, if the government is pushed to pay 250k as minimum wage then they will increase the price of energy (PMS, DPK, AGO, NLG and other fuel). Make policies that will make those money return to the government. i.e. if minimum wage is increased to 250k then commodities will be costly plus inflation. Bag of rice may cost for 300k, still you can't buy it. You keep rigmaroling.

Nigeria is finished!
The world is being restructured.
This current Nigeria has no future for indigenous people.

Lol.. thenumber one lawmaker does not even know the position of the law. Its unfortunate. These peopke are just politicians. They know nothing.
Number two the government units are all talking about wages, no one talks about what the wages would buy. With the continuous shrinking of products, the 70k willbe useless soon.
The concern of the govt and the people should be how to increase production across all goods and services.
Unfortunately Tinubu
policies so far achieve the opposite.
A government that think prices are increasing because of too much money in the hand of the people rather than a shrinking output will continue to formulate wrong policies like interest rate, tariffs etc.

Akpabio must hire good advisers and listen to them too. His outings have reduced the respect and influence of the office of the Senate President. He should learn from David Mark and Saraki.
