Five individuals were taken into custody by US Capitol Police on Wednesday for disrupting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to Congress.

During his speech, Netanyahu sparked controversy by labeling the protesters "Iran's useful idiots," implying that they were being backed by the Iranian government.

US Capitol Police posted on X, “Part of the crowd has started to become violent at First Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. The crowd failed to obey our order to move back from our police line. We are deploying pepper spray towards anyone trying to break the law and cross that line.

“Five people in the House Gallery just disrupted the Address during the Joint Meeting. All of them were immediately removed from the Gallery and arrested. Disrupting the Congress and demonstrating in the Congressional Buildings is against the law.

“Our officers just reported that the final number of arrests in the House Galleries was a total of six people for D.C. Code §10-503.16(b)(2), Unlawful Conduct.”

A massive crowd of thousands had converged on Washington to voice their opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the United States.

The protest has turned contentious, with police confronting demonstrators and using pepper spray to deter those attempting to breach the designated police perimeter. The tense standoff reflects the strong emotions and deep divisions surrounding Netanyahu's visit and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"We recently learned from the director of national intelligence that Iran is funding and promoting anti-Israel protests in America. They want to disrupt America," says Mr Netanyahu.

“Well, I have a message for these protesters. When the tyrants of Tehran who hang gays from cranes and murder women for not covering their hair, are praising, promoting and funding you, you have officially become Iran's useful idiots."

The Israeli air force has launched airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, following a deadly rocket attack that killed 12 children and young adults playing football in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of carrying out the strike on the Druze town of Majdal Shams, but the Lebanese militant group has vehemently denied involvement.

In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted airstrikes on seven Hezbollah targets deep within Lebanese territory early Sunday, with unclear reports of casualties.

Escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah raise concerns of a full-scale war, as exchanges of fire have become frequent since the Israel-Gaza conflict began in October.

The recent bloodshed at a football pitch in Majdal Shams marks the deadliest incident in the region since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

Initially sporadic, clashes with Hezbollah intensified after the group launched rockets at Israeli positions in support of Palestinians, following the Hamas attack.

In response to Saturday's deadly strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged severe retaliation against Hezbollah, warning of a "heavy price" to be paid.

Hours later, the Israeli Air Force said it had struck "terror targets" including "weapons caches and terrorist infrastructure" overnight.

Hezbollah's spokesman, Mohamad Afif, has denied any involvement in the deadly strike, while the BBC is investigating reports that the group attributed the explosion to an Israeli interceptor rocket in a communication with the United Nations.

Israel's foreign ministry has released the names and ages of 10 victims, all children between 10 and 16 years old, with an 11th victim identified but whose age remains unknown.

The details of the 12th casualty are still unconfirmed. Verified footage shows a crowded football pitch and stretchers being rushed to ambulances, capturing the chaotic aftermath of the incident.
