‘South West States No Go Areas For Protesters’

Ahead of the August 1, 2024, planned protest, traditional Oro worshippers in the southwest, in conjunction with all members of the Yoruba Patriots Movement (YPM), have declared the six states in the region no-go areas for prospective protesters.


The group in a statement yesterday said it would occupy every space of the southwest from July 28 to August 28, 2024 to perform traditional rites in Oro in this year’s Oro Festival.


According to them, “The streets in Lagos, Ogun Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States are no go areas for protesters.

“Go to your states to protest against your state governor if you are not happy with him “,


It explained that during the period, “No strangers are allowed to roam around the streets without express permission of traditional rulers in southwest cities, talk less of staging any form of street protests of any kind.

“We are not saying you should hold a protest against any government. You have the constitutional right, but respect our own cultural rights. You may go to Abuja, Kaduna, Yola, Jos, Enugu, Port-Harcourt, Owerri, Benin city, Sokoto, Yola or Maiduguri.

I am not a Lagosian but I fully support Lagos people that insist that let everyone go back to his state and protest.

Over N700 billion worth of infrastructure was destroyed under the pretext of protest. Same infrastructure that Abia, Imo, Enugu Anambra and Ebonyi all combined do not have.

Mind you, endsars was a riot, not a protest.

Two things have become very noticeable...

1. There is a predetermined agenda against the Igbos and as such, a narrative is being forced. Even when it is obvious that majority of Igbos have no interests in the protests, you still somehow twist the matter to malign them.


2. It is glaring that those against the protests hiding under ethnic hate have very selfish ulterior motives and they have made it known that the 2012 protests was a selfish move and was not done in the interest of Nigerians.

It is baffling that the Hausas who have been involved in far more conflicts and destruction of properties in Lagos & the SW generally are not being called out as much as the Igbos who have openly refrained from joining the protests.

Is it the Igbo man that has majority of his assets in the SW that will want protests and destruction? People whose idea of fun is doing business and making money on a daily basis will now say they want that business destroyed? It is one thing to miss a day or two, it is another thing to lose all one has worked for.

What about Indigenous people of the SW? So we should continue to endure & keep quiet about needless hardship because a Yoruba man who is only concerned about himself is in power at the centre?

Is the SW Even thinking of post bat? Be it 4 or 8 years, power will shift. And be it 8 or 16 years, the SE would get there. So why not build cohesion and cooperation for our future rather than deepen distrust, hatred and bad blood where it is not needed.


As much as violence of any sort, would not be tolerated, an ethnic group should not be made the focal point of misdirected anger against the failings of apc & bat.

Let those with the intentions of protesting should go to their home region and do the protesting.
