Economic Challenges: Learn From Obasanjo, Agbakoba Tells Tinubu by bennybuhari(op): 1:52pm On Jul 26, 2024
Amid the growing economic challenges in Nigeria, Chief Olisa Agbakoba, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged President Bola Tinubu to take cue from how former president Olusegun Obasanjo handled the situation during his tenure.

Speaking in a chat with TheScrutiny, Agbakoba said the major issue confronting the Tinubu administration is lack of funds to meet the needs of over 200 million Nigerians.

Giving some practical suggestions, Agbakoba said Nigeria will get out of the woods within six months if President Tinubu can implement the recommendations.

He wrote "The major issue confronting President Tinubu is very simple and easily resolved! President Tinubu doesn’t have enough money in the treasury to meet the huge National needs of 200m Nigerians . So there is a simple solution. I urge President Tinubu to look at how President Obasanjo resolved his money headache .

" First President Obasanjo tackled corruption and plugged waste . Nuhu Ribadu saw to that , as the fear of Nuhu was the beginning of wisdom . Second and most important was that president Obasanjo understood what is called public sector borrowing requirements and how much was needed to sustain the National system".

"Most important, was President Obasanjo's clear vision of how to raise revenue. This was from optimal production of crude oil . The revenue from crude oil was fully maximized. Crude oil daily production was at maximum capacity. Funds from sales of crude propped the Naira value to the dollar. The Government was able to get things done without borrowing but using crude oil revenue" .

" President Tinubu must reverse the trend by maximizing crude oil outputs, removing the international oil companies from control of our hydrocarbons revenue, paying down debts and hedging the Naira against the dollar with crude oil dollars".

" So quite simple, president Tinubu should maximize crude oil production to at least 2.4 million barrels a day , pay down debts , apply funds to meet national needs . If this simple fiscal process is sustained Nigeria will be out of this desperate situation within 6 months. In the final analysis optimal crude oil production is our way out".

He was making sense until he got to the text. That man doesn't understand the upstream oil and gas industry. Everyone is an adviser in Nigeria...even those who don't clearly understand the subject.

Obasanjo's time was filled with lessons, no doubt.

But let's be real, Tinubu is already on the right path, making moves that even the critics can’t ignore.

Instead of just learning from the past, how about we support the current administration to tackle these challenges head-on? The future is what we should be focusing on, not just the echoes of yesterday.

Obasanjo had his time, and we all know the lessons learned. But Tinubu has a different approach; he’s all about innovation and progress. Let's give him a chance to steer the ship. The tides are turning, and I believe in his vision for a better Nigeria.

COMRADES, Tinubu is too incompetent to be our leader, that's all

Obasanjo’s tenure was not without its hurdles, but he navigated through them with strategic foresight. Agbakoba’s advice to President Tinubu is timely and essential. We need to learn from the past and adapt those lessons to our current economic landscape.

The focus should be on sustainable policies that can uplift the common man. Let’s channel our energies into building a resilient economy that thrives on innovation and entrepreneurship. The time for action is now!

Obasanjo had his time, but Tinubu is a different ball game entirely. Let him chart his own course; he knows what he's doing. Agbakoba should focus on supporting rather than critiquing.

1. Running balanced budget or budget surplus consistently.

2. Ease of doing business. Anyone should be a set up a business and get a permit in at most 2 weeks completely remotely without stepping foot in any government agency including hiring staff, importing equipment, getting land etc. If there is any denial the reason should be clearly stated backed up with relevant regulations and law. The applicant could go hire a lawyer remotely go to court and all mater should be resolved up to supreme Court in max of 3 month. Credit rating of individual and businesses should be publicly available. The principal idea is any businesses dealing with any government agency should be transparent and decisions should be fast and possible appeals should be fast also.

3. Security decentralization upto local Government. If possible retraining and transferring military personnel to the police we currently don't have any real external threat.

4. Recruitment into judiciary and civil service has to be transparent and only the best recruited. automation would reduce bureaucracy the redundant staffs can be retrained as public school teacher, Nurses, security officer, or something in the line of agriculture.

5. University has to be real research institution providing technological solutions to present day societal problems. Education policies has to be targeted e.g. Forecasting labour market demands etc

6. The problems are known the solutions are not rocket science either but state capture would make it impossible

Yes, they have proven themselves to be more civically educated than the Nigerian people who, to this day, present themselves as mere zombies(and victims) in their democracy. An unbiased assessment of the arguments put forth by the protestors to date would lead you to the same conclusion. undecided

OBJ is totally different from Tinubu. OBJ isn’t a propagandist and doesn’t have media foot soldiers unlike the builder of Lagos who bombarded the media space with lies about how he’s an evil genius with the magic wand and silver bullet.

OBJ assembled the best brains to manage and coordinate affairs of his government regardless of their political affiliation and ethnic background, but mr builder of Lagos is championing ethnic jingoism in his appointment and also rewarding corruption.

Your idol doesnt understand the past and future. The easiest fix is to increase our oil output by 300k-500k pbd. Just by allocating 100k bpd to Dangote Refinery alone at an agreed price for local market, is going to reduce demand for FX for refined oil import which gulps about 75% of our FX.

BAT values loyalty over competence. His economic team is made up of yes men and women.
OBJ values competence over loyalty. His economic team (Iweala, Soludo, Munhtar, Bode Augsto , Ezekwesili etc)
was full of professionals who came from intl organization with global best practices. They werent afraid to tell OBJ no. BAT’s men and women cant
