First Time Maize Farmer. Please Help by mazamb(op): 5:08am On Jul 28, 2024
Hi Everyone.
Please I am a first time maize farmer and need your inputs. Here's a pic of my maize farm at five weeks. Second insecticides spray was done at four weeks, this fifth week fertilizer was applied. This was my second visit to the farm and I'm worried about the weeds, my Farm manager said the insecticide is working and theres no cause for alarm that in a week they'll be gone completely. From this pix is it feasible? What should be my next line of action? Please your inputs will be invaluable to me, because I'm thinking of manual weeding (Manager is saying no need to do it) because I'm worried.

How many days ago did you apply herbicides before taking this picture?

Can I know the names of the chemicals you applied ?

Who did the herbicides application, did you do it personally or you hired farm workers to do it for you ?

I am.seeing signs of the weeds slowly affected. You should know that some herbicides will show it's work during a 7-8 days period. If correctly applied, you will need the 7-8 days of waiting to see them die completely sometimes ( depending on the chemicals used )

One problem I have realized with people who do these applications,is that they only want to run the length and breadth of the farm. If the weeds do not adequately soak up adequate mixture, they many times won't die o. This is where the challenge lies. But your chemical mixture is perfectly fine, my farm did the same two weeks back, it was the eight day after spraying they died. Give it three more days before you reach conclusions

What's perfect in the combination? How is using glyphosate on grown corn of that age perfect?

Glyphosate, 24D and Striker were applied.
Confirm very well, If glyphosate is truly among the mixture, just forget about the corn...your farm manager has killed/ruined your farm.

It is wrong to use Glyphosate on already grown Maize. If your maize survives it, it will be saved only because of the Atrazine present in the other two hebicides. Next time, he should use just the Striker and 24D.
Re: First Time Maize Farmer. Please Help by Ameboperoo2: 11:26am On Jul 29, 2024
I have used glyphosate in my grown corn before but I can't trust someone else to do it for me.
If you can carefully avoid spraying on the corn, if a gress is too close, you use your boot to bend it away from the corn or avoid the grass.
As your farm is now, the best is to go manual, then apply npk fertilizer.

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide. It will kill off the maize and the weeds.
As a first-timer, seek advice from experienced ones to guide you. They say he who asks questions seldom goes astray.

You guys should be careful with the ways you dished wrong advice in the public forum. It's misleading. This is Internet, the whole world, not only Naija, is reading. It's not by force to comment on subjects you no little or nothing about.
Everyone up here just condemned your initial approval of glyphosate usage on grown maize here you are again dropping another disjointed piece.
On another thread, you are also the one who was advising/encouraging farmers to be selling maize @N40 per cob in this period of high cost of production.

Will you shut up. I deliberately shunned that not to ruin the relationship between him and the other party. Was I the one who counselled using glyphosate on grown maize. Are you madd ?

This moniker starting with Z is dangerous. Obviously, he needs to take his medication daily. He is always trying to position himself as a consultant with a farm. But it is clear that he knows absolutely zero about farming. I had to oppose him in anotjer maize thread to caution him. Guys, be careful with that guy before you regret it. You can see that someone else has noticed him. He is not a farmer. He has no experience. Don't listen to him. That moniker that starts with Z.

You are stupid. Very stupid. Since you can't reason and speak to an adult like an adult, do not ever in the rest of your life engage me on the forum again. Ediot

Na wa o. Why did you have to attack and insult him this way because he pointed out the truth? By the way, your advice seems like you are just saying yes to everything..."yes, glyphosphate is good...yes, you shouldn't have used glyphosphate, you should have used something else etc".

At the bolded, thank you my sister for the observation, one of my blood too called him to his blunders in another thread yet, he remained adamant and vile towards him. You are a good student of *logic and reasoning.* Simple reasoning will point to the fact his "perfect " simply means "yes, the right thing was done ", which may be misleading to other newbies. That was exactly what I was trying to correct so that other new/inexperienced farmers who might come online to seek similar assistance will not see his comment and fall victims. But, instead of admitting his ignorance and move on, he was busy justifying his ignorance by saying he did not not want to ruin relationships between the OP and his manager, even at the expense of misleading other readers? I don't know how an "adult" can spew out such publicly. If you don't want to ruin relationships why can't he read and move without commenting?

I wish he would realise the errors he made instead of attacking left, right and centre.

There are better ways to defend oneself asides dishing out insults. It is well though.
