Quest7777:
I said it, Nigeria can comfortably subsidise fuel at ₦100 per litre, if Govt cuts down on cost of governance and effectively fights corruption and wastages.
That's a big LIE. It's the unsustainable high costs that creates scarcity.

Nigeria has had fuel subsidy since 1973. Even in the 1980's and 90s there was periodic fuel scarcity.

There were two chances to removes fuel subsidy with less pain....Jan 2012 and mid 2016. Everyone interested in the subject understands why.

Nigeria cannot afford fuel subsidy or any other subsidy at all. That's the reality. Every subsidy must be scrapped including forex subsidy, university subsidy, rice subsidy, fertilizer subsidy and even health & education.

Privatize all government companies, especially federal owned companies. Deregulate ALL prices, including minimum wage, it should be canceled.

Scrap all import & export tariffs and drastically reduce taxes. If Nigeria doesn't do these things it will remain a poor country for generations to come. That's just the way it is. Sorry.

Good Luck to Nigeria

Why would there have been need for subsidy in the 70 or 80. Less population . Dependency was not on oil . Refineries worked .

I think Sowore and some other activists fixed the date and also coined the name for it, including the agenda.

If Tinubu restores just petrol subsidy back, the protest will not hold trust me. Tinubu removed Petrol subsidy. Removed subsidy on electricity tariff. Removed subsidy on tertiary tuition fee. Tinubu removed virtually all subsidies ordinary Nigerians benefited from. It was ill timed and no meaningful progress has been made so far despite enormous billions saved from removing these subsidies that have existed for decades. Where are the monies Tinubu saved from removing all these subsidies for over 1 year now? It shows deep rooted corruption by Tinubu's government
Mr Franchasng,

Please read the above by Mr Ibe. Subsidy had to go. The issue is that Tinubu kicked against it when Jonathan removed, and that was the best time to erase petroleum subsidies. So maybe it is Karma on Tinubu but subsides had to go.

But here's what I'm curious about, if subsidy has to go and in turn the cost of living becomes very high due to inflation, then what aspect do the government be willing to take responsibility for its citizens, I would have preferred a situation where the government decides to reform workers wages, thereby people are paid handsomely or preferably hourly labor wages are introduced then they begin to withdraw those incentives.

The subsidy was put in place because of high fuel prices caused by the Yom Kippur Arab-Israeli war in 1973. Government wanted to help the people.

As usual, every time government wants to help, it creates bigger problems. Such as the degradation of the refineries. It has NOTHING to do with population. Anyone interested in HOW that happens should do the research and think LOGICALLY about these issues.

Good Luck to Nigeria

The point is EXACTLY THAT....government doesn't and shouldn't have responsibility for the people EXCEPT for law, order and justice. That's all. That's what FREEDOM is about, that is what everyone should be fighting for. Anyone that PAYS for your stuff also CONTROLS your life. Ask any teenager about their parents and control.

If government had any responsibility for Law, order and justice there will be no corruption, subsidy or not.

Subsidy isn't a new term in Nigeria it only became popular under Gej because of the corruption in government and poor systems to check it at every level.

Nigerian are not behaving like kids far from it Nigerians active adults from birth cos the government gives u nothing and keeps taking from u not even a decent road, transportation or electricity. Some don't even have water. undecided

The west are given alot to sustain and enable them to thrive. Nigerians must adapt to thrive or be swallowed.

Pla give Nigerians some respect after being treated like dogs by their own government.

This actually sounds convincing but then, I think, with the way citizens of this country are been weighed down due to the past wrong economic policies, the process of removing subsidies should be gradual and consistent.
Things are tough already and I can't imagine how everyone will be dealt with when prices of things soars than it is atm, landing cost of fuel is climbing 1k plus, it's just too scary.

For whatever reasons in Mar 2015, Nigerians voted for the wrong policies that were advocated by APC. To its credit, APC implemented exactly what it promised....strong naira, free school feeding for children, Anchor Borrowers Scheme for farmers, continued fuel subsidy among others. Nigerians are living the results today.

When PDP came into government in 1999, cement was scarce. Nigeria was a major importer of cement. All cement factories were 100% owned or majority owned by government....Nkalagu, CCNN, Benue Cement and so on.

PDP under Obasanjo launched the Cement Reverse Integration Program I think in 2003. The programme implemented

1) the SALE of all cement factories to private investors like Dangote and BUA, others like Lafarge also built new cement plants.

2) the DEREGULATION of cement prices.

3) Unfortunately, it also imposed barriers to importation.

By 2011 or maybe 2015, Nigeria had become self sufficient in cement and even an EXPORTER of the commodity.

When I was a little boy, there was always scarcity of cement, I remember my father and his friends looking and running all over the country looking for cement. There were at least TWO MAJOR CEMENT SUBSIDY SCANDALS, called the cement armada scandals under Presidents Gowon in the 1970s and Shagari in the 1980s, where government paid billions of dollars for phantom cement. Maybe young people need to go look up these things. Read your history. That's why you have internet, it's not just for watching comedy skits and pornography.

So we can say at least PDP made cement available. There was even a period when BUA and Dangote were engaged in competitive pricing and the price of cement went down for months. In real dollar terms, I bet the prices have still gone down.

So GOOD POLICY MATTERS and the good policy we need is SAP....massive privatization of enterprises and resources & deregulation of prices.

Privatization and deregulation improved cement, telecoms, broadcasting and banking some universities and air transport. It's undeniable, it took over 10 years to do in each case. If Nigerians want a better economy in the next 10 years, the time to re-start SAP is now. It requires some BRAVERY, some willingness to endure hardship. That's just what it takes.

Look at the EVIDENCE, forget feelings, observe and do some research.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

The sad thing is that a vast majority of the Nigerian people will NEVER vote for free market policies. The evidence is the democratic experience since 1999. There's simply no other reason than primitively LOW INTELLECT to explain why Nigerians voted for APC in 2015 after experiencing 15 years of REAL, CONSISTENT neo-liberal capitalist policies that led to VISIBLE ECONOMIC GROWTH.

It's interesting that the USA finds itself at a similar juncture in 2024. Let's see if the White Man's privilege has granted them a comparable level of intelligence. Such chances to make real comparisons don't come around too often.

Good Luck to Nigeria.
