The Number one problem in Nigeria is corruption. Public funds that should be allocated for infrastructures end up in someone pocket

Would u be ready to pay 50% of your total income to have such roads?

Or you continue the tax u pay now and manage the road u get?
I live in the US with roads like this. No one pays 50% of their income on tax. Not even half of 50%.

Same question Ive been asking.

Why will a normal human being build a road and leave the gutter open to fill up within a year and overflow with sand which will start damaging the road right away?

Why keep the gutter open? So that people can sample smell of sewage water?
Honestly I don't get it.

And the sad thing is that all these leaders travel abroad every day, and they don't see any open gutters there.

Yet they come back here and build this garbage. It's pathetic.

Bros if u gather all the roads in Rwanda add them to Lagos... U won't see a dam difference that's one

Drainage system is the most difficult thing in road construction especially in places like Lagos and South South even Abia too

The cost of one road in Lagos or bayelsa would do 20 in Abuja or Rwanda

Talk about what u know

I remember when I visited a City my friends where like "you are an expert in fluid mechanics.. How do we solve the flooded road " I looked at it once I told them the solution to this flood would be in a different LGA... They thought I was crazy... 7 years later JB did it and the drainage passed 4 LGA to fix a small flooded road

Drainage system is complex and people like u would prefer 15 roads with open gutter to 1 road with proper drainage
''The cost of one road in Lagos or bayelsa would do 20 in Abuja or Rwanda''

Really?

Can anyone confirm this guy's claim?

I beg to differ.

I don’t know you brother, and I’d almost never quote anyone on here, but I’ve noticed you’ve got a penchant for using exorbitant indices to support your claims for the reasons why good infrastructure cannot working in Nigeria.

I noticed how you supported a misconceived notion that it was impossible to achieve 24 hours electricity without people paying through their noses and this was the situation world over.

But I’ll call you out on that lie

Most European citizens pay around 12% of their net earnings for energy electricity + gas in winter. Now this is high mostly because they’re energy dependent and not producing countries.
Do Nigerians pay 12% of the minimum wage for energy. 30,000 X 0.12 = 3,600 for 24 hours electricity only.

To the topic at hand, urban development is not fully dependent upon taxes, but a willingness for authorities to maintain standards. How is it that Nigeria of the 70’s and 80’s had these western amenities unlike today?

Cost of government got expensive and infrastructure received less attention.

When these useless entities we call state governors build their roads, it looks nothing like this picture below.

This is the standard way you build a road in any metropolitan area.

There is the road for driving, and then there is a sidewalk for pedestrians.

Then below the sidewalk is the drainage.

The sidewalk hits the wall so it blocks out all sand, meaning the road is SEALED. You don't even need to sweep it.

The drains are covered, so no need for ''ENVIRONMENTAL DAY'', with citizens digging out MUCK from filthy open gutters.

NOW HERE IS THE QUESTION:

What is so hard about building our roads like this??

I LAUGH when I hear Nigerians talking about attracting TOURISTS to the country.

In fact some of you should be stand-up comedians.

NO TOURIST goes to a place where the roads are not built like this road below.

TOURISTS do not travel to a place in order to ride around in cars.

They are there to WALK.

And WALKING is not supposed to be 'SUFFERING' as we regard it here.

It's meant to be enjoyable. PEDESTRIANS are also TAXPAYERS and deserve their own road infrastructure, along with drivers.

Do you know that when you build roads with wide sidewalks, you can walk up to 10 kilometres and not feel it?

But with these useless roads we build with no designated walking space, you can't walk up to 1 kilometre without looking for okada or taxi.

That's why everyone is so desperate to own a car.

How many gutters will you jump?

When will these so-called state governors finally become CIVILISED like their counterparts all over the world?

Constructing roads with closed drainage is possible in Nigeria-and it's done in some major roads across most states. However, the problem lies in how well it fares. The gutters get blocked by plastic waste and when it rains the storm water flows on the road instead of the drains. You'll see a lot of this when you visit big cities like Kano. For closed drains to work well in Nigeria, the usage of plastic packs must be heavily regulated just like it is done in Rwanda.

In UK, Fuel duty is currently levied at a flat rate of 52.95p per litre for both petrol and diesel. 20% VAT is then charged on both the duty and the standard price while Nigeria subsidises.

Unleaded is £144.76p. Enough to make one protest if charged in Nigeria. Road tax is £190 per annum.
Nigerians were pay that amount before it was just inflation. Nigeria will gladly pay that amount if 1naria go back to 1 USD.

Inflation is the problem. Pushing Nigerians into poverty. Before APC van in how much was the exchange rate?

In the 70 to 80 nothing like subsidy. It was introduced after inflation. Bihari remove subsidy more than twice but inflation brought it back. Tinubu remove subsidy but inflation brought it back.

South Africa has no open gutters.

The difference between Nigeria and Rwanda/Kenya is that when they build new roads, they build them the right way.

In Nigeria, apart from Abuja, Lagos and Akwa Ibom, the NEW roads in other states are still built with open drains for the most part, and not a thought for where pedestrians will walk!

It's like they're determined to remain backward.
so is the open drainage your problem now? If so I will let the government know that open drainage is ur problem.. Next please

We look at the price purchasing parity when looking at tax.
What's 190 pounds tax to a car user in a year. That's around 16 pounds / month. That's not heavy.
Driving in the UK is for convenience, UK has a very efficient public transport system.
So if you want the convenience, you should be able to buy the fuel.

Just that electricity is like car or phone... It's production cost is fixed

Reason I said Nigerians are too poor to have 24 hours light
. Focus should be on growing Nigerians wealth till we can have a GDP per capita if minimum 10k dollars

A drainage system is not a complex thing. Other people have done it. Invite them, pay them and it will be done. The issue is that Nigeria is not highly economically productive relative to its land mass and population to embark on such long-term projects. Nigerian politicians, just as most Nigerians, think in the short-term rather than long-term. Akpabio was said to have constructed the drainage system in the state or Uyo at least, but the IBB Way road leading to the state secretariat was impassable once rain fell. It took Udom more than four years to initiate the actual reconstruction of the road in his second term. Whether there exist open gutters, I don't know. I think the government even had to ask World Bank for funds, for an oil-rich state o.
Same uyo that 2 land floods? ... It was udom that did the construction of a drainage system for one road

The issue with drainage is u can't do for one street

The drainage system for one road might take works in 5 LGAs

Not entirely the basis for having such poorly constructed roads. If so, why are there no such similar well-constructed roads in oil-rich states?

While I do agree that the economy has to grow so public authorities have enough funds to embark on such projects, the existence of states with huge oil windfalls or those with a low population base compared to how much they receive as allocation refutes that notion.
Which state in nigeria makes 500 million dollars from oil

Name one every time we won't hear world with oil rich

A state with a population if 3 million to 8 million making less than 200 million dollars is what u call oil rich?

But is it not possible to construct a state or city-wide drainage system or say Lagos does something like the Dutch did?

Corruption is everywhere. There is no corrupt-free society. As Mrvitalis stated, it is our unproductive state - Nigeria is not wealthy enough to embark on certain projects. The focus should be on generating wealth, and capitalism, not the crony type, is the answer.
