The Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule wants the north to address its challenges, saying most of the protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in the state were Almajiris who knew nothing about the rallies.

The #EndBadGovernance demonstrations which started on August 1 across cities in the country – to press home for a better economy – were largely peaceful initially. But the protests assumed worrying dimensions after looting and destruction in some northern states led to the imposition of curfews.

Governor Sule who is worried that some of the people who protested were young persons said most of them did not know why the processions were taking place.

“During this last protest that we had in Lafia, the majority of those that came out on the streets were the Almajiris – some of them five years old, seven years old, nine years old,” the governor said on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“A lot of them didn’t even understand the meaning of the protest. When I spoke with them later, they didn’t even know what they were protesting against.”


"A Ticking Time Bomb’
One of the ways to address the level of illiteracy in the north, according to the governor, is to educate the people. He said the protests are an eye-opener for leaders in the region, tasking them to double up their efforts in fixing issues affecting them.

“So, we must sit down. At one point in the year 2020, we sat down as the governors and took the decision about the Almajiris. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out well. They went back to square one,” Governor Sule said.

“Some of the religious leaders criticized it. But from what happened now, I don’t believe anybody will continue to criticize actions that will be taken in order to move forward. Otherwise, it’s a ticking time bomb, it will come and consume every one of us.”

One of the biggest problems we have in the north, from the day I came, is the idea of education and the one we are still pushing on,” Sule said.

“When people actually don’t have education and don’t have economic empowerment, these people will continue to behave the way these Almajiri actually behaved during this protest. So, education must be taken seriously in the North. We must be honest with one another.”

Even their governors and LG councilmen in the North did absolutely nothing for a whole 8 years of the Buhari regime. Look at the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Muhammed, for example. Today the man threw his name in the hat for the presidency in 2027 but this same man has been governor of Bauchi State for 5 entire years. In all of that time, he has done nearly nothing to reverse the determination of the Educational system in his State.
↪ Bala Muhammed was a Senator for the people of the South Senatorial zone in Bauchi State in the capacity of a senator under the party platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party [ANPP] from 2007 to 2010. He did nothing to help his people of Bauchi in terms of the actual development of the lives of the people.
↪ Bala Muhammed was appointed FCT Minister by GoodLuck Jonathan, and those who lived in Abuja could attest to his mediocre record even during that time. Attempts to investigate him went south in 2016.
↪ Bala Muhammed was declared Governor of Bauchi in May of 2019 and for 5 whole years, this man has pretty much-done nothing to significantly improve the lives of the almost 1 million children under his administration who are reported to be out of school; he has pretty much allowed the state continue on the path of deterioration while he continues to live large on their wealth.

And this man now dreams of becoming president of Nigeria in 2027. Isn't this Asiwaju Tinubu all over again?

It’s quite alarming to see how easily some can be manipulated into protests without even understanding the cause. This just shows the level of political ignorance that still plagues our society. How can we build a better nation when so many are just pawns in a game they don’t even comprehend?

Mallam means a scholar educated in Islam.

They are islamists in islamic boarding schools and not almajiri.

It also shows that many Northern leaders are shameless. They used those kids awfully, knowing what they were sending them to meet.

After the worst had happened all Atiku and co were concerned with was petitioning ICC, UN, Interpol etal against Tinubu rather than ensue for peace and for protesters to refrain from looting and violent conduct.

Even the most tribalistic hater, if sane, will admit that law enforcement, anywhere in the world, must move to quell a protest that turns into a violent riot of looting, anarchy, chaos etal that threathens a total breakdown of law and order.

We can see the lives of Northern children matter little to most Northern leaders. Otherwise there would not be so many Northern children who are illiterate, homeless, begging and deprived of what all other children in Nigeria have.

Nigerians should ask themselves how many voices of authority from the North came out to plead with the protesters to refrain from violence, arson, looting and criminal conduct.

How many Northern leadership peacemaking voices did we hear from when protests in the North was getting out of hand?

As far as I know, and I stand to be corrected, it was only Kwankwaso, of all the political bigwigs in the North, who came out of this with credit as a decent leader plus voice of peace and reason when he chillingly warned in July what the protest may lead to. He turned out to be 100% correct.

PROTESTS CAN LEAD TO CHAOS’

Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to consider the consequences of a national protest, adding that it can escalate into violence, loss of lives and destruction of properties.

"In these trying times, our nation stands at a crossroads. Our collective frustration with bad governance has reached a boiling point, and the urge to protest is strong,” he said.

“As an elder and patriotic Nigerian, I share your concerns and your desire for change. However, I urge you to consider the consequences of national protests and to channel your energy into a more effective and peaceful means of transformation—through the power of your ballot.

“Protests, while a fundamental democratic right, often come with unforeseen and dire consequences. The tragic events of the past have shown us that protests can escalate into violence, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread chaos. The repercussions of such actions extend far beyond the immediate moment, leaving scars on our communities and deepening divisions among us.”

Mr. Governor, almajiri are most hit in this hard, mind you they beg for everything from food to footwears from the starving and poverty ridden households, a almajiri can go from 10 to 20 houses ,of he is lucky he may get leftover foods unlike before, so they have every reason to protest
