I'm starting to think it might be a strategy.

Remove your main attackers and bring on defenders but introduce a sub with enough energy and talent to score goals. It's like actually going just a little bit defensive but making it appear as if you're shutting everywhere down.

Because, even after the defensive subs, Spain was still the better team.
