Hardship: Tinubu’s Government Should Admit Mistakes, Review Policies - Shekarau by ogododo(op): 5:58pm On Aug 10, 2024
A former governor of Kano State says the Bola Tinubu-led government should review its policies and admit to its mistakes.

Nigeria’s economic fortunes have plummeted in the wage of the subsidy removal policy and the floating of the naira – all implemented by the Tinubu government.

The value of the naira which is the nation’s currency has sharply fallen in the wake of these policies, prompting protests by Nigerians.

To address the issues, Shekarau said Tinubu and his team should have a review of its economic policies and admit to mistakes where necessary.

“As we say in the teaching job, the best learning is when you learn through your mistakes,” the former governor said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Let the government sit back and identify: ‘What areas have you made some errors? What mistakes have you made? What pronouncements have been made in error? What policies were put in place that are really breeding this kind of crisis of hunger and high cost of living and inflation [food] of 40 percent’?”

Since the famous “subsidy is gone” statement by President Tinubu at his inauguration in May 2023, the price of petrol is now about thrice higher, pushing inflation figures up.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s inflation figure was at 34 percent in June 2024, making the cost of essential items beyond the reach of millions of people.

Although Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law and introduced a raft of measures to cushion the impacts of the economic policies of his government, thousands of Nigerians in early August poured into the streets across cities in the country to protest over harsh living conditions.

Some of the demands by the demonstrators include a return of subsidy on petrol among others. But in his address following the rallies, Tinubu insisted there was no going back on the policy.

However, Shekarau argued that the Tinubu government should admit to its mistakes.

“Admit there are some wrongs that have been committed; some errors and probably certain things have been taken for granted,” he said. “This is the time to sit back and address them.”

Tinubu is a leader who understands the complexity of governance. It's crucial to learn from experiences, but let's not forget the long-term benefits these policies will bring. Change is hard, but it’s necessary for progress.

Tinubu is doing what he believes is best for Nigeria's future. Change is hard, but let’s give him time to adjust the sails. We need to support him while he navigates these waters.

Yes he has made some mistakes! He ought to have put some measures in place to cushion the effects of his policies before implementing them.

That thing is an agbadorian; don't waste your time on those folks. But then, I don't think there's any need reversing fuel subsidy removal. It was costing Nigeria a lot of money and it needed to go. We should explore alternatives. CNG is a cheaper alternative to PMS.

Even the CNG you’re talking about it’s crap. I have a friend that converted his Corolla. First, you still have to use fuel in your car, that is what you’ll need to start the car. Secondly, the sound of the car was really different from the normal sound of cars. He also had to refill the gas after a week or at most 10 days. More importantly, have there been any research on the dangers of the CNG in cars? There’s a lot of European countries that have abundant of gas and that would have been a cheaper alternative. Have we asked ourselves why India or China haven’t jumped on this opportunity even with their vast population?

Many of the critics are foolish communists, who don't see beyond their nose. Do you think Tinubu is happy to remove subsidy and risk his political capital. Even his supporters are unhappy but subsidy has to be removed.
Tinubu, Atiku and Obi all agreed subsidy has to go.

All these idiots like want to destroy this country. They want short term cheap fuel for long term suffering.
Buhari borrowed money to keep the currency peg and subsidy.

Naira valuation is what he needs to address.

Subsidy must be removed. .

Reason the govt choked was the weakened naira. If he can achieve that, he will be able to remove subsidy indeed (coz now, he still pay it). And use the remaining proceeds to national development.

They no go hear.. they can't hear you sir..

It's almost like everybody knows the right thing to do at this point in time, except Tinubu.

It's the way of power. It blinds you to reality.

In the Nigerian setting is even worse. It's a combination of Power, Parochial selfish interests of a few and clulessness.

He whom the gods want to destroy, they first make deaf to reasoning..

Long t RM benefits When over 80% of the citizens must have been pushed into poverty line and many must have been sent to their early grave. Policies that made higher percentage of the citizens unable to feed and do their normal routine are deadly policies MD antipeople.
Every reasonable leaders wall over the world review their policy if it begins to affect the generality in a negative way and dipping the citizens to deeper and excruciating poverty and hunger. Tinubu is the most unwise leader I have ever seen in my life. The first day during your inauguration you went to announce a very sensitive policy that affect virtually every aspect of the economy. Instead to study first the pros and cons of the policy before implementing it. Buhari was even more wiser than Tinubu because he knew the adverse effect of the subsidy and he had to tarried it till the expiration of this tenure but your Tinubu sheepishly came and announced its total removal without visibility study of pros and cons.

The did not do anything, we are now paying triple for subsidy, naira was devalued too so much

Please where is that national development in the last one year of his reign? Audio development that no one can see except you and Tinubu's minions.
Hope you're aware that inflation has crippled every appreciation in the allocation because the price of goods and services are now triple and some times four times, meaning you need triple or four times of the previous allocation to meet needs. Application of common sense is very important and zombie lifestyle.
