They can't pay it.

Short term, the only way the states can find enough cash for minimum wage is taxes, or the government totally removes subsides on petrol, allowing price of fuel to rise to N1700, 200 of which is taxes (as suggested elsewhere on this site by another nairalander), and power, which means everyone, not just band A pays N210 per kwh or more, OR.....we take another loan for projects, and use the freed up cash for salaries....and hope oil rises up to 140 dollars per barrel

Long term, we become an exporter of manufactred goods and services, with the benefit that we can set prices for manufactured goods and servicies....which is part of why subsidy must go so that our refineries function at full profit and we can be a major exporter of refined products like engine oil.

The 70, 000 Naira new minimum wage is bad news for Lagos civil servants

The civil servant thought the president will approve at least 100,000 as the state was already paying 35,000 naira wage award which they knew would eventually be added as the new minimum wage

So since the payments of wage award started in January loans have consumed it, 70,000 minimum wage now appears meaningless

Prof. Charles C. Soludo is number one Anti-Workers' welfare governor. Since inception in Office no promotion of state civil servants, nothing substantial said or in working to implement the 70k minimum wage, Lobbies State House of Assembly Members against positive course in favor of Worker's welfare and uses deceptive gimmicks of productivity in pally with wage at his public advantage of people's emotions.

That's a big lie. Lagos is not paying all low level staff 70k. Maybe only those in the offices at Alausa. Look at their LAWMA road Sanitation workers. They deliberately broke the staff strengths to 20 people per group under private companies (their political cronies) to avoid paying the minimum wage. Which by law is 25 people. They pay those sweepers 30k and that is by the second week of the next month.

They delay their salaries unnecessarily and the so called 10k monthly palliative doesn't get to most of them. I know most of them around my area, and how they struggle to cope especially with the salary delay of 30k.
Who will fight for them? The voiceless. They tried protesting one time but they threatened them with sack if they try it.
And to think some of the sweepers are graduates too. And almost all the supervisors are graduates receiving 40k for over 6years of working. Some of them are my friends and anyone can easily verify my claims from any of them you meet.
