Also even though Kiev is historically russian, Russia wasn't interested in taking Kiev back. So what he's saying is that as from now, Russia would be aiming to take back not only Kiev but also a lot of non historically russian territory. The way things are going, Ukraine might be reduced to a strip of land within Poland at the end of this war.
