Why not pay everyone that has a complete application and is qualified at once?

Anybody that has uni education but cannot create a business for himself should have his brain checked. The essence of education is to make you creative and not only for blue - collar jobs. As a graduate nothing stops you from driving a bus in a better way than uneducated way do it. Bankers that japa don't they drive and do security in UK and America but they would be forming in Nigeria. What stops unemployed Nigerian graduates from farming and selling to neighboring countries. We need to change our orientation in Nigeria.

The 20k which I think is part of the loan will be paid monthly directly to students accounts on monthly basis for their upkeep. This one paid to the school is for their school fees

This isn't bad especially for students from very poor homes. A lifesaver, I must say. Education should be prioritized if we want concrete changes in this country. Illiteracy level is too high in this nation. It mostly reflects during voting.

Oh wow that sounds cool.. 20k every month is not bad at least it can help in various ways coupled with your own money. Tho my major concern is how students will pay this money especially those who won't find a job. I didn't really read how the student loan works but if he is able solve this problem I pointed out by creating more enabling environment for Job opportunities then it's a good start.

Also I thought he should have made this for everyone except international students so everyone can freely apply unless he intend doing that later

We don't need to discourage students from taking this loan. To start with the amount is not much and it is going to relieve parents. Besides, just one politician is enough to use biro to clear the total loan sum. This is really not the best of times for students if you ask me.

What did you want from Nigeria government?

The issues with this initiative is that universities can hike their fees and pass down the burdens to the students, when the students who are sponsored by their guardians complain, the option of loan is brought as an alternative

Eventually it wouldn't make sense to even take loan to complete your education because if you are to pay back when employed, you may only be getting transport money as take home when the loan monthly deductions is taken ,,,, you have to also account for inflation.

But I trust Nigeria, we are highly incompetent because this scheme will die a natural death due to corruption, ghost students who are enrolled and student loan defaulters...

One of the key functions of education is teach the receipt productivity, someone who can't be productive in any form is not worth educating, the loan makes alot of sense.
Tuition fees were hiked, subsidies pulled out, this loan makes alot of sense.

many of us see fact but we tend to avoid it, in lautech, around Ajimobi tenure, there were “no fees, no exam” but after a time, most students were allowed, till now, many have graduated and some are still owning like 3 sessions. When school calculated everything, it was around 2bn in naira. School thought they will come and pay when going for nysc but most didn’t come for their result because they didn’t have the money to pay. Tell me, someone that own like 300k and earning 20k in teaching job. Why would most of them pay for result when they knew know tangible job awaits them.
So, the same thing will likely happen here, if they accumulate debt of 700k through out the studies, And they secure job of 50k, do you think they would pay. Many might not even do white collar job, if they are into business, the money might be gone.

20k is monthly upkeep and is not a loan. Tuition is sent directly to the Uni and is repayable. Tuition is the full school fees.

U that have always being a perpetual beggar even to pay your school fees you still depend on government intervention that's meant to enslave you for life.

Other countries are in the era giving grant, your own country is still giving loan to goto school, you dont see the side effects because you are meant not to be useful to yourself and the society at large . Loan with temporal solution and forever enslavement. Emilokan indeed people.

Well, it makes a lot of sense to those obtaining the loan and they are not complaining.

Thank you my Presido. This is great intervention, poverty should not deprive able students their opportunity to go to Uni (comfortably). Next, please try and revamp our Technical colleges too Mr President.
