I always wonder why people believe protests and riot will change the economic fortunes of a country.
There's this economic lie that always precedes any riot or protest, it's the issue of reducing the cost of Governance.
President Ruto sacked all his entire cabinet, reduced the salary of his staff, but that didn't increase the revenue of Kenya.
Africa must accept it's a resource rich continent but cash poor continent.
The earlier we discard the narrative that we are a cash rich continent, and focus on how to make our resources work for us,the faster we will move out of poverty on the continent.
Our young people in Africa should stop all this economic protest but start focusing on how to industrialize Africa,we need a collaboration between countries in Africa to turn out fortunes.
Alh Dangote has shown the way by building the biggest Refinery in Africa,I hope other wealthy Africans will take a cue from him and focus on industrializing the continent, enough of these protest that will end up producing no results.
God bless Nigeria
God bless Africa
You are replying to your own imagination. Protest are meant to resist attempt at making the masses pay for what the elite have stolen via inflated expenses.
When a leader takes $100m to do what $15m can do, is that africa will industrialize? I know you are helinues or MANNABBQGRÎLLS.

Fellow Nigerians, let us take a look at Kenya.

William Ruto was elected in 2022. Decided to raise taxes to reduce the deficit and have access to loans. The citizens protested, destroyed and looted the country.

The president cowered, did their bidding , drop the new taxes and reduced the size of his cabinet.

But did that change anything ?. NOPE.

Kenya will be forced to borrow at an expensive rate , will sink further in debt and progress will be slow.

Meanwhile , the protesters continues to threaten the president everyday about another round of protest. They have fully weaponized protest, become a bone in the neck of Ruto and a distraction for his administration

What did Ruto gain by cowering to the protesters?. What did Kenyans gain ?

Safe to say the wheels of progressed is grinding to a halt in Kenya.

Now compare the contrast to President Tinubu who within a year got an improved credit rating for Nigeria from three rating agencies, got our foreign reserves up after paying a backlog of $5 billion within 4 month, paid external debt of $3.5 billion, paid domestic debt of N7.4 trillion amongst other local debt, got our stock market performing the best in Africa, got our Revenue from N 3trillions ( H1 2023) to over 9 trillion ( H1 2024) , oil and gas production up, security and fight against terrorism improved, funding to health and education improved and reform underway, social safety net reform, student loan, minimum wage, credit facility, youth investment funds, to mention a few.

But you want the same man to go the William Ruto way ?.

You clearly don’t want the best for the country nor wish the country well!!!

How much do the roads all over the country generate for the government?

Yet they are still built with money because the transportation of commuters and goods is a necessity of itself.
if tolled, roads can generate good amount plus no stupid loan was used to fund them. That's different from using loan to build a dormant rail line to Katsina then taxing dead people and renewed hope survivors to repay the capital loan. It is wrong.

It promotes unproductive borrowing. It means leaders can now borrow, develop their villages/states, then tax the dying economy/populace for repayment.

Govt needs money .
That's literally not true (a quick google search would tell you that there are at least 14 countries that doesn't collect income tax from citizens and immigrants alike)
Any country rich in natural resources shouldn't need a significant amount of tax from people if the resources are well managed, Also more tax means less purchasing power for the people irrespective of whatever infrastructure the tax is used to procure.

Protest or no protest, government must always raise funds to run the country.

I will only advise every government to focus on more taxing for the fat cats who cannot even stage a protest in the midst of the luxury they already enjoy. But not too much taxation that prevents their creation of jobs for the ever angry mob.

To run campaign as a populist supported by the youth, is not the same reality with taking hard decisions as a leader for the greater good.
Don't mind them jare. They think naa mouth to take run government. Even as a father of the home you sometime needs to take hard decisions that will benefit the entire family and reject decision that will benefit few family members.

You are right if the small country is able to generate income from natural resources that provide for all government spending.

Nigerian natural resources income that includes oil, is not even able to provide for 10% of spending that the government need to develop the country beyond our current 3rd world status.

We will do extensive public participation because we don’t want to be blamed again, to be accused of introducing things that are insensitive without considering the plight and concerns of Kenyans....

It seems like this part flew over many Nigerian heads over here, it's obvious from their comments what most of 'em failed to understand is a government that carries it people along is what we the Kenyans want and not the musical chairs of government that the West Africa giant have.

Well, it's different strokes for different folks.

Article 1 of the United States Constitution grants the U.S. government the power to establish and collect taxes.
Article 1 : for emphasis sake!

A U.S. resident's income is generally subject to tax in the same manner as a U.S. citizen.
If you are a U.S. resident, you must report all interest, dividends, wages, or other compensation for services, income from rental property or royalties, and other types of income on your U.S. tax return.
You must report these amounts whether they are earned within or outside the United States.

U.S. residents are generally taxed in the same way as U.S. citizens.
This means that their worldwide income is subject to U.S. tax and must be reported on their U.S. tax return.
Income of residents is subject to the graduated tax rates that apply to U.S. citizens

If you want to know how paying taxes later come to help their citizens,
here we go....

Taxes also fund programs and services that benefit only certain citizens, such as health, welfare, and social services; job training; schools; and parks.
Article 1 of the United States Constitution grants the U.S. government the power to establish and collect taxes.

None of those thimble are a benefit
They're all pools of corruption and failure

How much does USA tax its citizens?
Here we go again...

The federal income tax rates remain unchanged for the 2024 tax year at 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%.

Where do US taxes go?

The majority of this revenue is used to pay for government activities (employee salaries, infrastructure maintenance), as well as to pay for goods and services provided to United States citizens and businesses.
In FY 2023, the federal government spent $6.13 trillion.

We will summarize it all in our below post....

Sadly, these fat cats can use the media to stir up confusion, these wild cats can pay bloggers to misinform the public, they can instigate the masses against the government, using the economic status of the people as a weapon.

Imagine the CBN newly proposed tax on banks, see the sentiment it is already whipping across. On a more reliable note, a new generation bank CEO (name withhold) recently accrued to himself 1 billion naira from the profits made from forex. While he shared couple of tens millions to departmental heads....a sister of mine got about 6Million naira. All they do is take advantage of the system to manipulate the naira to dollars - And they are so smart that they can evade CBN during bank's audit. That's how crafty and unpatriotic banks have become, plus all the other profits they make from unsuspected customers. Also imagine what kind of stupendous profits the bigger established banks are making. Little wonder how a bank CEO can become a billionaire overnight without any industry or factory that produces anything for him.

The kenyan president is a weakling and a people pleaser who can't make tough decisions especially for the greater good of his country.

How can you sack your carbinet members and slash salaries just because people protested?

As a leader, any decision you make should be based on thorough enquiry, research and consultation of top economic and political experts, about the implication of such decisions.

Rushing to scrap the bill and sack workers means he didn't calculate well.

I don't like Tinubu or his policies. But if Jonathan had taken a hard stance about subsidy removal back then as Tinubu is doing now, maybe things would have panned out well.

Democracy is the government of the majority. But you can't always go with the majority. Most of them know nothing about economics.
